Default "Low Coolant" Problem Solved

Started getting an intermittent "Low Coolant" warning coming on now and then and an occasional case of running hot on my 89. When I'd check the radiator it was always full.

I replaced the already new thermostat and while doing so I noticed several LF intake bolts very loose and saw where coolant had been leaking out.

I tightened the loose bolts, refilled the system and haven't missed a beat since. All I can figure is the coolant was boiling out of the engine before the thermostat had a chance to open.

I fixed my low coolant light problem by replacing the radiator cap. I don't see how they are related, but it is what it is...

it blows the water out and then sucks air in if the seal is bad

There is a proper sequence for torquing the intake, but I am glad your leak is resolved. Hopefully, there is no further leak due to gasket erosion.

Cliff, are you taking notes?

My radiator was always full of water, so no air. Maybe it was pressure related.

Mine seemed to be full too. When you accelerated it would pull down and light would come on. Did not have any coolant loss overflow and radiator stayed the same level. There was a small seam on the cap seal and when the radiator level it expelled the water into the overflow as it was supposed to do. The suck air in the radiator through the bad seal. Soon it was blowing air in the overflow and the sucking air back in. Wild and crazy situation. New cap problem ended. Coolant recycled and light went out.

Yea, I know this but getting to them is without dismantling the top of the engine is impossible. I hope it will hold until it's time to replace the injectors again, Accels out, Bosches in.
