Default Looking at new tires for C4

Is it possible to put the same size tire all the way around? 1994 coupe looking to put 285/40 ZR17 on all 4 corners. Wheels are stock sawblades. Would the larger size cause clearence issues?

The rims in the front are only 8.5" wide 285's are not the correct size. If you get 9.5" rims up front then you can safely run the tire size you posted. there will be no clearance issues.

If you look at the sticker on the drivers door it will tell you what came on the car stock, but the only way to be sure whats on it now would be to remove the wheels the size and offset is cast into them. I would say most that run all one size run 275 on all 4 corners.

If I recall 285s are getting hard to find and if you do find them they are going to be expensive. I run 275s on the rear of my 94. 255s on the front. 89-92 used 275s on all for corners but you need 9.5 inch wheels for the front , not the 8.5 inch wheels you have. Acceptable size for the front of a 94 are 245-265/40-50x17 on 8.5 inch rims.

Great info. One other question - is there any advantage to having the 255/45 on the front and 285/40 on the rear? From an engineering standpoint, does the larger sidewall aspect ratio of the 45 series front tire induce better handling and steering response?

The narrower 255/45 front tires were used to help keep the car from darting around in pavement that have ruts from heavy traffic. The change to the narrower front tire started in 1993. Before that, a 275/40-17 tire was used on all 4 corners. '93 and later cars got the 275/40 tires with the optional Z07 performance suspension.

The 275/40 tire is still available from a variety of tire manufacturers so IMHO, your best bet would be to find a pair of stock wheels in a 17x9.5" size and use 275/40's all around. That wil also allow you to rotate the tires for better wear.

The advantage of the 45 aspect ratio TO ME is a better ride and since the car can pound on rough surfaces the 45 is what I favor. I still would go with 275s on the rear and if you like buy 2 9.5 rims for the front put 275s on the front also--- then you can rotate them somewhat--front to back --but not side to side.
