Default Targa Top Repair

Hey guys, I decided to try this stuff as a last resort before buying a new top:

http://www.eplastics.com/Plastic/ple...SIVE-IPS-4-4OZ

http://www.eplastics.com/pdf/IPS4SDS.pdf

From what I've read about it it should be able to fix the small crack in my top. It's relatively expensive at 10 dollars for 4 ounces but if it works it saves me $800. It's in the mail and I will let ya know how it works out.

Definitely subbed. I had a thread going where I tried numerous things. In the end I had to use a heap of jbweld, a couple screws with the heads removed as pins across the crack, and had to paint it because it was visible.

Are the tops actually acrylic or some other kind of plastic? I would think acrylic would be too soft.

These glues work by dissolving the plastic and "melting" the edges together. If it's not the right kind of plastic it won't work.

afaik, the tops are acrylic. i did the whole disolve plexiglass in methyl hydrate and use a dropper to let it suck into the crack. it looked amazballs but the expansion and contraction caused it to open up every morning.

and to the OP, im on an iphone and right below this thread apears my old thread if u r interested in reading about the things i tried.

I think they're polycarbonate. I just saw that mentioned somewhere yesterday.

I have a copy of the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association specifications for the '84 Corvette. This document lists the optional "Removable Plastic Roof Panel, RPO code CC3, as Acrylic Plastic, coated for scratch resistance". This spec says the optional roof is 4.4 lbs. (2 kg) lighter than the standard roof.

The glue claims to work for acrylic and polycarbonate. I believe it is technically Lexan as it says it on my top and from what I found lexan is a polycarbonate material.

No such markings on my roof panel. Is your top blue or bronze? Eckler's sells several tops, listed as either acrylic or polycarbonate. Could it be your top isn't an original GM top? Since your roof panel is marked Lexan, that's your answer, and it doesn't matter what my roof is made of! Good luck to you with the repair. Let us know how it comes out.

You might try polishing your top with a "headlight polishing" kit. If that's not aggressive enough, try regular automotive polishing compound. Go easy until you find some success, then follow up with the more mild headlight/plastic polishing compound. If it's really bad, try some 1500 wet-or-dry (wet, of course), then the more mild compounds.

I've only owned my '84 for 12 years, so don't know if it's the original acrylic top, but it looks like new! I use Mother's Clay Bar.
