Can't believe it gettinmg a new starter
installed and my mechanic is having a hard time getting one to fit how many possible different starters can their be for a 350. He is asking if its original block ,truth is I don't know but still how many different starters can their be. He is talking about getting mine rebuilt right now.

A rebuild is not a bad idea unless you need a new starter immediately, in which case go ahead and replace it. Any decent mechanic should be able to get the right starter and install it without any issues, assuming the engine is unmodified (which your mechanic did ask about). Note: The L98 and LT1/LT4 have different compression ratios and I'm not sure if the same starter was used for these different engines. The starter for the LT# series may require more power to overcome the higher compression.
For a rebuild, the parts that usually wear out are the motor brushes, the electrical contacts, and the drive gear. I say the rebuild is not a bad idea because these rebuild parts are available in rebuild kits at reasonable cost (cheaper than buying a replacement starter) and not difficult to install. Good luck.

Give Lou a call at Houston Warehouse and see what she has for it.
1-800-392-3332
It will be from China most likely (aren't they all?).
Regardless, never take a new one apart for any reason. It voids any warranty.

The LT1 /L98 and manual vs. auto I believe had changes along the way so you might be up against limited parts...not sure as I have not had to replace mine yet....I am running a ZF in mine and I know when we did the conversion the starter required was different than the OEM unit.

If by chance the solenoid was bad on the orig starter you may be able replace with another solenoid.
Again...Houston Warehouse for abt $12. + 10 shipping. That's what it was for C5.

What about an aftermarket starter? Places like Summit Racing or JEG's will have mini-starters from MSD, PowerMaster, Tilton, and even their "house brands" that you can use for your particular block.

Try Rock Auto.com, they have always come through for me. You didn't say what year the car was, so I couldn't look it up any further. As said before, getting yours rebuilt is not a bad idea either.

I've seen several of your posts and I believe your car is an '89. If it's another year post the correct year.
If you use the GM# and cross it with whatever brand the parts house sells it will fit UNLESS something foolish has been done to your car. Use this GM# 10455702 it will fit BUT if your starter was the original I'd likely consider maybe just building it.
If someone has used an after-market off-shore product you might likely need to get new correct starter bolts. Might be wise anyway.
If your guy has carried the old one to the parts house expecting a match and they say "none" - it's likely had something other than a quality product used as a replacement with bolt on drive end adapters to be somewhat of a "multi-fit".

Good move. The guy that cant find a starter sucks. Its an SBC. Two bolt patterns and two flywheel sizes can bolt up since the last 50 years. The same starters will work on a big block or a 6 banger.

This is a high quality local shop that builds their own hi-torque mini starters.

You have to love them for two reasons:
1) they refused to sell th biz to an Asian conglomerate, and
2) they quickly redid my starter, bought from them 12 years prior, for no charge during a walk-in wait.
Now, I am okay with the huge warehouses and use them plenty, but this customer service has few peers!
