Default Vats ignition switch 95 vette experts

Guys

My car is a 95 auto. When I bought the car I didn't realize someone
had bypassed the vats system. One day I was cleaning underneath
the dash and found an ignition key in a switch with wires going
somewhere. Yesterday the ignition switch in the column has
basically fell apart. I noticed the key that operates the column
never had a chip. Just a regular old Gm key. I need to replace
the switch in the column. What's involved in doing this . Do I
ask for an original ignition switch, is there a generic switch I buy
when the vats is bypassed.

Thank you in advance my brothers

We did that for a fellow driving through town on a week-end and the car quit. He had next to no money and I think had to borrow money from the gal with him to pay for the cylinder we hung under the dash and just inserted his second key.

Your situation is a bit different so I'd just remove the cylinder that's in the column now and match it. Take the key that's in the cylinder hanging and get a resistor and do a quality by-pass. In all likelihood you could use the cylinder that's hanging and the key if it rotates but you would need to confirm it's for an A4 or M6 column, if it has a button on the cylinder to "depress" it's for an M6 and there's maybe issues with the column lock. I've never tried an M6 cylinder in an A4 car but it could maybe work.
