Default Seat belt tension

Hi,

On my '86, both seat belts will not stay tensioned. They loosen up after a few minutes and then you have to pull on them and let them slap back to get them to tension up again. Common problem? What's the issue and the fix? Also, I see a button on the floor that says "cinch". I assume this is to tighten up the belts but it seems to do nothing. Anyone know about this? Thanks in advance!

I have the same issue with my 88....I know someone had posted that there is a recall regarding the seat belts; not sure for the same issue though....

In the 80s people were still not using their seat belts as much as they should, so manufacturers designed them to not pull which was the common complaint. If you move an inch or two, the belt will stay in that position by design. That's why (at least on my '87) there is a "cinch" button on the reel.

I had a seat belt problem with my 1992 Vert. I decided to take the seat belt mechanism out, and in there was a damn penny. It was anchoring against the seat belt locking teeth, and once I removed the penny it was working until the last day.

I prefer catsup.

There's plenty on any old car that will benefit from a good cleaning and re-lube. This is especially true where the weaker plastic parts can fail when the embedding dirt in the existing lubricant becomes more of a glue. I always do both when working on something, even if it is just dust removal.
