Tag in engine bay '84
There is a tag riveted onto the pass. side hood latch mech. It has letters/numbers and Chevrolet stamped on it. What is this?

Called a TRIM TAG - This is what was used on earlier Corvettes prior to the SPID/RPO LABEL being added to either the console lid (back-side) OR a storage compartment behind the seat. There's rather limited information on the TRIM TAG. I believe the FSM calls it BODY - PAINT - PLATE.
Paint code, trim code, time/date build are included.

good info WV -
I've never seen a trim tag riveted to the hood latch mechanism on early C4's, and curiosity got the best of me. here's a pic from vin sequence number 9072. does anyone know the approximate date or VIN when the general quit this feature?
from the door jamb sticker, the build date of this car was 6/83. if i'm reading this trim tag correctly, the model year date is "E" (1984), but what is "06A?" six could be the 6th month, but "A" - ??? - or is "06A" a "time" thing?
the interior code, if that's the interior code, looks to be "62I," but from the Black Book, 622 is saddle leather and the upper/lower paint is "53" (gold metallic). this particular car was gold metallic with saddle leather. could 62I be an interior code (I for interior), or be some sort of date code? the stamping for "I" differs from the "1" in the VIN code.
I actually learned something new, so I guess today won't be a total loss -
to the OP (and anyone else) - could you to post a pic of your tag and list the interior/exterior colors and door jamb build date?

I have '84 trim tag data decoded "somewhere" BUT the 62 (I) is the reference to the basic interior trim, seat code would change depending upon material or leather but regardless they would share the same base I code.
Date code is I'm quite sure, 06 - month, A - week of month (A = 1st)
On the second line the E to the right I believe is a reference to the paint solids, E - Enamel. I need to confirm that from my info but that's what I recall.

now to the first line - "E 06A" - I understand the first week of the 6th month ( I have seen date codes like that before), but the car had a build of 6/83. shouldn't the first line read "D 06A," where "A" is 1980, "B" 1981, "C" 1982, "D" 1983, "E" 1984, etc? one could have a 1984 corvette built in the first week of the sixth month in both 1983 and 1984, OR am I not understanding the first letter of line one?

Had there been an '83 MODEL YEAR build then there would have been a D. One needs to remember this TRIM TAG was used by some DMV for ID verifications. That tag on cars that had them and the VIN tag in the windshield, certification label on doors were used for confirmations.
