1996 corvette - what is a Z-1 package?
i'm looking at an autotrader ad, and someone has a 2500 mile, 96 coupe - here's a cut and paste...
I've never heard of that option, so what is a Z-1, and was this some sort of factory thing, dealer installed thing, or what?
the car (white over red) looks pretty much stock with the exception of the engine and exhaust. it looks to be an automatic, so i'm guessing it's an LT1 car. what is that switch below the gear shift indicator? I had a 96 LT1 (auto) and I don't recall any switch in that location - ??? - the switch is labelled "(something)TC" with what looks like "power" and "normal" settings.
Custom "Z-1" package. (not ZR-1) Total selling price new $62174. Must sell $30,000 or best offer.

I do know one thing....That red intake and automatic shifter goes against a lot of things Ive read on here lol (if its truly a factory car). I dont believe ive ever seen a set of those valve covers either. Definitely an interesting find.

There was no official factory Z1 Corvette. Maybe some dealership or aftermarket company came up with a package that they called "Z1" and sold it for a premium. But this car is an LT1 (or maybe they transplanted and LT4, given the red intake) and automatic. Nothing special, in other words. And that $62k msrp the seller claims was within a few thousand of the msrp of a ZR1, and roughly twice the price of a base coupe. You can pick up a nice 96 LT4/6sp for a third of his asking price, or a really nice actual ZR1 (which is a truly faster and collectible Vette) for less than his asking price.

Not a factory optioned car for sure.
A lot of dealers came up with special packages, but I have never heard of this one.
More than likely it was a aftermarket shop car.
I also highly doubt it has an LT4 engine. Much more likely they just painted the intake. Valve cover and other aftermarket dress up items in that engine bay.
Even though it looks like a very nice car with low miles, I don't think it is worth anything close to what he is asking.

To the OP, I just perused the "C4s For Sale" forum here. There are plenty honest-to-goodness ZR1s for sale with really low miles for well under $30k. Hell, there's a 90 ZR1 with 36k miles that looks very clean for $20k. You should run far away from that craigslist ad and start looking at these if you are willing and able to contemplate $30k for a C4.

Agreed. And to be clear, even if has a full LT4 that isn't incredibly special . Actual 96 LT4s can be bought for less than $10k, depending on miles and condition.

Looks like it say PWR ECT NORM. My guess would be settings for when the tranny shifts. Not factory.

I think there is or was a ZZ1 crate engine, but I don't think it was an LT style block. Might be a transplant LT4 or just the intake. The switch on the shifter is probably a torque converter lock-up switch. Some aftermarket transmission kits offer that with an automatic shift kit & torque converter upgrade.

As far as the tranny I'm not sure it's anything but I know my brother had what they called a switch pitch converter that gave him a higher stall speed with a push of a button. It might be something like that.

Plus the obvious mismatch - the LT4/auto did not exist.
Looks like a dressed up LT1... nothing more
