Default Bose Radio CD Player Question

I bought a used Head Unit to replace my original unit which is pretty much toast. I was told by the seller it was a matter of plug and play, but some guy with a stereo shop said codes were assigned to each head unit with the car it was originally installed in. So while it does not need an input code for (example if the battery was removed) a code is necessary for my car to recognize the replacement. BS or True. ?
BTW donor car is a 1994 mine is a 1996

I've not heard of that. But someone here probably knows for sure.

It's not true. On a C5, if a security code is entered by the user and you swap it into another car, you have to have that security code to reactivate it. A C4 doesn't have a code.
