1988 Rear Hatch Switch, Cable and Opening Technique
My '88 rear hatch ajar switch is defective (open). I've looked at my normal sources and can't find one. Where are they available or does some have a spare?
As shown in the picture there is a short piece of cable which appears to be cleanly cut off. What's the story with this?
I know of an '88 that's junk but hatch is down and there isn't any battery or interior. What's the best way to open the glass (and no I can't use the hammer method)?

The button on my 84 didn't work to pop the hatch, so my uncle hooked up a random switch he had laying around and it worked! My hatch you can just lift that hook i'll call it and it freely moves when open, maybe mine's broken but it hasn't given me any problems yet!

Ahhh. But it's so short you can't get to it with the plastic in place. If I crimp 6" onto it I could possibly position it on the security shade so that I could get to it. Or 18" would get me to the edge of the security shade. Regardless I think I'd crimp a small "hook" onto it that I could put a screwdriver, pliers or finger through to pull it.
Is this a good idea?

Need to get the emergency cable back in place so it can be used, if needed.

Excellent. I ran it under the shade and with my little finger can now find it. Seems like there should be some type of handle on it because with my somewhat limited hand strength I can't pull it open. It does open with a small pair of pliers. But this seems really hokey for a car that was this expensive.

My power release did not work on my '88 when I got it so I connected a long boot lace to the short cable and ran it up to the back of the seat along the wheel cover. It was actually fairly easy to pull and open the hatch. The short little cable seems like a poor idea as it can be extremely difficult to find.

All done with the cable. Tested it out after the reposition and it can be done. And now it's original.
