Default 1989 C4 gas gauge not working...

Good Morning! My gas gauge isn't working (ugh). Previous owner claims that he had tank dropped and repaired. Any suggestions as to why it is not working would be appreciated! TY!

Tank is very hard to ( drop ) so have my doubts. But the pump unit is very easy just take the fuel door off then the bib a few screws and hoses and pull it. Repair or replace.

My guess would be a bad connection at the tank. Check all the wiring in that area.

By "not working," is the gauge "way off" or does it always show Empty (or always Full)?

One common problem is with the sending unit in the fuel tank. This has the float that raises or lowers with the fuel level. The sending unit is fairly easy to access by removing the gas filler door, and then unbolting the top (which contains the fuel filler neck). The sending unit will pull out from the top of the tank (no reason to drop the tank).

Good luck.

Gloria B, If you are not mechanically inclined you need to take your car to a good shop and have the fuel area looked at and maybe remove the fuel pump to solve your problem. Doing this yourself is not hard but can be challenging.

That's a good article but it looks like all of the pics have been removed from one of the old CF Servers. The tread is 10 years old.

This thread may be of some help as it does have a few pics.
