Default C4 Bose radio connections

Can anyone tell me what the black wire with single connector is meant to be connected to or used for. The one that the finger is touching in the photo. This is from an 1986 Coupe. (BOSE radio). I have the shop manual but I do not see this in the wiring diagram.

It should be ID'd in the FSM as "GRY" LIGHTS INSTRUMENT PANEL

The instrument panel lights connection you mention is in the main connector body marked LAMP along with 12+, ANT and GND.

Excuse me I took maybe to quick a "peek" and missed the C1 reference.. Look at your FSM to the extreme right of the radio schematic and look for C5 - check the wire for GRY/WHT and it would likely only be used for a C68 car as a dimming control for the C68 control.

I didn't use an '86 FSM for the "peek" but I'm quite sure you'll find it. It will/should also be contained in the conventional Delco radio.

***I did go back and check an '86 FSM and I don't see the C5 for the Bose but it's there for all of the rest of the years that use that part #'d receiver as OE. It was in the Delco (base) for an '86 though. I didn't look particularly close so maybe it actually is in the schematic.

Wow, thanks for that. You pointed me in the right direction. All is clear now. I see that you are right and that the C5 gry/wht is there in the base radio diagram.

Also managed to find 1987 Bose radio wiring diagram and it actually includes the C5 connection.

On that connector, Brown goes to the light switch (on with parking and headlights), the orange wire is hot all times from the Courtesy/Clock fuse.

Thank you. Sounds like it dims the radio? Can I leave it all unconnected?

It's not used on 84-89

You need the orange for constant power. Some aftermarket radios use the lights wire for dimming, or to turn the radio's lights on.

My '88 FSM shows only two black wires, one is to Gnd the other goes to the Antenna.

Does that connector have two contacts, one for signal and one for shield?

My radio shows the brown and orange as shown in the picture. Can’t see if it’s a shield

^^^^^^^^

This is a correct reference!!!

I believe that many can't see the OP's post because the 'snapshot' is captive to the 'PhotoBucket' issues and depending on the browser and adds used it's not seen. Here's a much newer post that has the same part #d radio and all of the connections that 'dirtthrasher' is referencing.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...6041551-a.html

The most recent poster might just post his snapshots and forget about using this thread as as reference. The OP back from 6/16 mentioned Bose and if all of the info he posted was 'factual' he was sadly mistaken. The 16041551 isn't but a UU8 from '85 - '88 and maybe could be used for others!

Post #3 actually has sufficient info for this most recent poster!

That particular wire is a pulse width modulated signal used to dim the digital display on the C68 climate control. The Bose radio shares it's diming signal with the C68.

The orange and brown. I understand the orange is hot. The brown leave unconnected for an aftermarket radio?

I have a android touch screen that needs it to dim the screen and turn on button lights. Some aftermarket radios might need it, best you look at it's install wiring diagram!

If you don't understand the 'install instructions' likely supplied with your 'after-market' radio you need an installer!! You either 'get it' or you don't.

Both POST#3 and the most recent link provided by LWesthaver have sufficient info that along with the install instructions should get you in business. Perhaps it's time for you to visit the AUDIO/ELECTRONICS Forum. It might get you much closer to success if you mention your 'after-market' by make/model!!
