transmission fluid question.

transmission fluid question.
Hello,
Last year had the trans fluid and filter change by a shop. 92 base model automatic about 45,000 miles . The reason I took it in was particulates on dipstick, and there was bubbles on dipstick at cold and hot marks. I checked it today after extensive driving in summer heat. It was way over hot mark , like one inch or more , but no bubbles or foaming ? I think it's overfilled, but it should foam if it has to much fluid ? Somewhere I read that it will have bubbles if under filled ? I don't know ? I would assume that an auto shop would have a flat rate pricing and capacity size in their book , as simple as drop pan and refill to specifications ? Maybe it's fine ? Yes I don't know ???

Did you check it on a flat surface and the trans in nutral or drive?

How did you check it? If you checked right after a lot of highway driving, or lots of stop and go, you need to let it cool down for 20 minutes. Start it, go through all the gears, and pause for 3 seconds in each gear. Let it idle for 3 minutes. Check it. Yes, must be on a flat surface.

For a '92 I'd expect to see likely a GM# 10174498. Does it matter? Maybe!

There is no cold mark on the dipstick. The lower hash mark means fill, the upper hash mark means full. Check the level when hot after driving, car level, transmission in park, engine running. The 20 minute cool down stated above is wrong. Checking immediately after starting is wrong.

Yes engine running. Took 16 oz cold fluid out. car shifts better on road and engages much softer. before was a solid clunk sound ? all I know is that it has improved all the way around. Thank you.

Trans fluid
I just changed my trans fluid yesterday (partial not a flush) and checked and rechecked the level afterwards. Even though the fluid was clean before hand, the trans shifts noticeably smoother. I used Valvoline Dex/Merc synthetic. Same stuff I use in my Benz trans. Great stuff and priced right at $20 gallon. I use other Valvoline products like power steering fluid and brake fluid but I use Mobil 1 in the engine.
