try brake cleaner, compressed air if available, and a whole bunch of paper towels.

Pardon, I guess I'm incorrect. I thought I read somewhere that '86-'87 valve covers had that brownish tone from the factory. Maybe it was actually how they patina over time.

My '87 covers have been stripped or something, more polished but not great looking and the emblem was missing. That's before I purchased, of course.

I'll clear my mind and listen.
