PS: Big time TCC issues on the E models will set an 1870 code.

So, there's no mistaking problems there.

Mines a '94 - just had the trany pulled and all new seals/gaskets install - also a torque converter.

94 is (should be) the "E" model. Strictly computer controlled.

Since it has been recently repaired, if it is behaving differently than before, you might want to put a scan tool on it and see if it is corresponding to the PCM commands.

Taking off from a light, doesn't matter if it's in D or OD because you can't go lower than 1st gear anyway. You might see a little benefit from manually holding it in 1st gear before letting it shift into 2nd, but this will only give a tenth at best and (IMO) is not a good idea unless you're racing for pinks.

I think the number of drivers is relatively low who always control the gears in their auto tranny, maybe 20 percent guesstimate? Most put it in OD and drive, letting the auto trans automatically select the best gear for the situation. When doing spirited driving (or autocross) it's more common for drivers to manually control an auto trans, for obvious reasons.
