Default Downshift problem.

96 LT-4 6M

I'm having trouble getting into 1st in my car.
It won't let me in until I'm under 4mph. Anything above that and it grinds.

Also if I'm sitting stationary I can't just jump into 1st. I need to shift into 3rd or 2nd first, and sometimes when I do go to engage first it's like there's a hard barrier but all I need to do is let the car roll a few inches and it will engage fine. I'm hoping it isn't the synchro and I just need a fluid service but I'd like some advisement.

Fill your fluid in your clutch it is under the puter on the drivers side.

I should mention I've done a Slave Cylinder and Master Cylinder replacement and the fluid has been serviced within the past 2,000 miles.

Then pump it up and hold for five minutes then slide your foot off and let it snap back. Might take a few times to get all the air out.

Your symptoms indicate that the clutch is not releasing completely.

on both accounts.

You either have air in your hydraulic system, due to a leak or not getting all the air out after replacement, or you have a bad slave/master cylinder.

Did you follow the bleed procedure for the hydraulic system when you replaced the slave and master?

Recommend a visit to ZFDoc's site and doing a little reading.

I agree with the advice given above too, but would ask this:
How much pedal "free play" is there? In other words, how far will the pedal move downward under your foot, before meaningful resistance is felt?

I'd say probably 3/4-1" or so.

Why are you shifting into 1st anyways? There's really no reason to shift into 1st unless you're stopped in this C4... Especially with an LTx engine... ESPECIALLY with an LT4!

Well that doesn't sound bad...seems like it's bled/and hydraulics are working but it cant hurt to check anyway. When is the last time the trans fluid was changed?

I had a similar problem and it was a loose ball pivot point on the clutch release fork. The looser it got, the farther I had to push the pedal before it would release. It finally got so bad that the fork would scrape on the back of the pressure plate and make a horrible noise! Unfortunately to fix that, I had to remove the C-beam and drop the transmission to gain access to the inside of the bell-housing where that pivot ball is.
