my 92 has a hurst shifter, but I never personally liked the big white ball shift ****. The problem with replacing it with something else, is its a 9/16 thread. Most of the shift ***** I've found (that I like) are 1/2 inch or less.
I had a brand new pistol grip handle in the box. It was pulled and replaced from my 73 with the one with a button on the top for my line lock. So I had this one laying around. Did some digging and RPM Outlet has an adapter that was supposed to work.
I ordered it and thought what the heck, I'll try it. They had it to me in a couple of days fyi. Its made of polished aluminum and has an adjustable threaded sleeve inside it. Slipped right on.
The adapter looks good, still trying to decide if I want the pistol grip or not. Take a look for yourself. BTW my car is NOT a ZR-1. That was put in the car from the previous owner and I am worried taking it off will tear the crud out of that part of the dash.

I have not had a chance to take it out since I put the shifter handle on. I just finished putting in a new MSD opti spark, coil and 6AL box. Waiting on a harness adapter before I can drive it.
Just sitting in the car and moving the shifter around with the new handle feels good. It extends the throw a little more than I thought it would. So its hard to tell how it will feel and work at the moment. Hope to finish it tomorrow night when I get back to the car.

I've just gotten so use to the grip from racing, just feels more natural to me. Still not entirely sure I like the extra distance with the throw. We shall see, but if it doesnt work well, I'll probably try the T-Handle.

I have nothing against the look of the white ****, looks clean and cool. Its more of a personal fit and feel for me than anything.

I ordered a Hurst ball (not shifter) because it was the only round ball I could find with the correct shift pattern; went on the stock shifter stalk like it was made for it; eventually had the shifter shortened, modified and rebuilt by ZFdoc; now that turned out to be one nice combo.
Oh and the white ball is a nice touch in an otherwise all black interior.

Are you sure it is a Hurst shifter?
I thought the Hurst shifters do not use the lift ring from the original shifter.
As far as the shifter ****/handle, I think it is whatever you got used to that becomes your preference. I got used to the T-handles and to me they feel right. I tried the pistol grip style on an early Challenger and it just didn't feel the same. It seems like most people adapt to a ball pretty easily and most cars have a version of them with aftermarket variations.
I was thinking of just buying a 9/16-18 tap and making my own, or modify some old ones I still have. (probably the T handles.)

OP's is NOT a HURST shifter. Neither the HURST or the B&M used the lift-ring. I have a HURST ball on my '90 and like it BUT I became acquainted with the "ball" in the mid/late A body GM's. Friends had the T and I just didn't care for it. I don't use the jamb-nut with my ball, used this way actually "shortens" the stocker and lift-ring is still operational.
I believe your idea of threading an existing T is a very good idea.
The "pistol-grip" I don't think ever and it seems there would be interference 1 - 3 - 5
If I were to redo anything it might well be this combination. I've a Hurst but it's still in a box.

I've got a Tremec tranny with a Hurst shifter on it, including the ball. If I was going to replace it, I think it would be for a T handle with provisions for a lineloc on the thumb end of it.
I've drive all 3 types (ball, T grip and Pistol grip) and I have to say the only Pistol grip that I found comfortable with was in the older Road Runners and GTXs.

The feel of it reminds me our lenco trans in our top sportsman car. Just something you get use to having. Most of the cars I see from Super/Pro up seem to have a pistol grip, so I guess its just something I'm use to.
My only issue so far, as predicted, it does make the 2nd to 3rd throw a little longer. Can't tell if its going to be too much for consistency sake or if I'll just get use to it. I powered thru the gears a couple of times last night and was able to power shift easy.
If I wind up not liking it, I'll throw on one of the T-handles and try it.
Not sure what the heck that means. You can't be saying that this is unique or a ricer deal. Because 20 plus years of racing experience tells me thats not accurate.
