If you have a fire extinguisher you might want to ask your local fire department if they offer classes in the use of a fire extinguisher. The heat from the fire is very intimidating.

Also think about your garage.

Here's a recent column I wrote on all of this.

Thanks for the article. I learned some new things about fires.

I read a few other articles on the site too. Do you write them all or you're part of the group of writers? That's a really good site especially for newer guys like me, thanks for that. You should post a thread about it. Your content would help answer a lot questions that pop up here again and again.

That looks like that Velcro One Wrap. I got a roll at Lowes or Home Depot and it works great for all kinds of stuff. Extension cord holder, hold things to your carpet..all kinds of uses.Strong as anything! I think if you overlapped more than 4 inches, you could probably use it as a seat belt!

Jay - They're all mine.

Actually I've written 10 books and over 1500 columns. I've been doing this a while.

Here's my C4 book. It's been out of print for a while. The Amazon.com prices seem a little high to me. You might want to shop around for a better price.

Sorry for the interruption to the thread.

I had a wide roll of velcro from an upholsterer friend. It's wrapped around a bar at the front of the seat, and around the can as shown. One tug and it's off.

That's pretty crazy. Finding the writer of a book on a forum. Guess not too crazy since its a C4 and hell they require a lot of attention

I picked up a C4 book recently but will put yours on the list. Thanks for all the articles friend! Im gonna be one of the last guys in the US who knows about combustion engines when there's nothin but electric crap cars everywhere

Damn man, so sorry about your Vette Do you know what caused it?

And that's what I'm telling ppl!! something is better than nothing. Obviously if the car gets engulfed in flames quickly or its just too hot to approach or its a gas tank fire then yeah, GET AWAY n forget it but sometimes a small fire can be put out before it grows n grows

When i first bought my C4 i kept reading about fires, nothing noted about the cause so watching some of the fires i saw some come from the catalyst area.
when i was a kid my parents had a car burst into flames after having it parked for a few minutes.

Cause was an old converter coupled with it being close to the oil pan that had some buildup.

So my car being exempt got as little extra parts as possible.

And when i was getting ready to fire my car up after doing a bunch of upgrades i bought an extinguisher for both sides of the garage.

I even pulled both pins before firing the car up expecting a fuel leak.

No fuel leaks, but i had an oil leak that made it's way down the exhaust and caught fire while i was breaking in the camshaft...

So glad i bought those things, main thing on my mind was a neighbor that burned his house down the prior summer from an engine fire in his garage.

Now i have an extinguisher rolling around in my car driving me nuts, i need to mount the thing somewhere.

I do not know "why" specifically, but I do know where.
The rubber fuel line from the frame to the manual fuel pump.
It was as you could imagine - a cheap, 1/2" X 6" fuel hose from the local parts store. Should have never used it in the first place.
I had a pre-fabricated replacement and planned to change "someday".
I did not know the fuel was leaking, it was not earlier, but it was and it was on fire while driving down the road.
No fire suppression of any kind.
This happened in town. You can see how fast the fire can spread before the fire department can get there.

Thanks for sharing. Another story/reason to simply have some kind of extinguisher

Again, sorry to hear that but this is a reminder to the rest of us that we all need to check these older sports cars often. Battery area, fuel lines etc etc. Its like having a child almost you know lol

Are you going to replace it w/ another Vette or move on to a different car?

The short answer - Yes.
Not sure when or which series.
I've owned a C4 and a C3. Built a couple of trucks. Now I am starting to look around again.

NEWSFLASH!!!! All cars can burn! New ones, old ones, expensive ones, and cheap ones. Not just Corvettes. Gasoline, electricals, and materials than burn are in every car manufactured. Just go to Home Depot and pick up an extinguisher for each vehicle you drive if it makes you feel safer. They're cheap enough, but don't expect to save a burning car with one. Very dangerous for someone who doesn't know how to put the fire out. A car fire will be out of control in 2 -3 minutes using a small extinguisher Trust me....I've been a Firefighter for 26 years now and seen it all.
