Default exhaust info needed

hi all, i have a 94 LT1 with 14k miles and i am usually a fanatic with originality but my stock exhaust is just too quiet. im looking for advice on what my options are. i dont want really loud but something with a nice rumble. can i just change mufflers without disturbing my stock exhaust? if so do i have to do anything as far as with the computer or anything like that or is it as simple as just changing mufflers? ( just read factory mufflers are welded on so if that the case i will leave stock ones on) opinions please, thanks, Nutsy

I have Allens chambered muffler eliminators on my 95. The rest is absolutely stock, sounds great to me. First drive with them on I said "this is how a corvette should sound!"

There is no computer changes needed for new mufflers or cat back exhaust.

The stock mufflers are welded on, but are easily replaced by cutting the pipe.

As for muffler/pipe choices,

I have tried the eliminator pipe and I love the sound at idle, but it is probably not what you want because it is loud if you give it any throttle.

I have heard the magnaflow replacement mufflers and they may be a good choice for you. They have a deeper tone, but not too much louder.

For a lot more money there are cat back systems that sound pretty good. I currently have a Corsa and Borla systems on mine. Both sound better than stock, but neither is real loud. There are many other choices too.

The best is to try to go to some events or club meetings and actually hear what different setups sound like and what the owners think of them. Sound clips on the internet do not sound right to me and I could not base a choice off of them.

Good luck.

I not sure how different a 94 is from my 91 but I noticed on my stock mufflers that the inner tailpipes were not fully open, just a small dime size opening in the middle. I was able to use a long drill bit to make some holes then use a big punch to open up the holes. It's not a huge difference but it is an improvement until I can get something else.

Absolutely. The main issue is your manifold and the ECM doesn't care what sort of rice mods you put unless it changes exhaust efficiency in a HUGE way which the noise makers won't.

Take the resonator off leave the rest will have more volume but not be overbearing..and its a cheap fix best of all.

eliminated the resonators on my '90 and left the rest original. Nicer sound but not intrusive. Some small pops when throttle down.

Nutsy, our Street axle back #15623 will do a great job at bringing out the deep vette tone without compromising your ride comfort. The volume level at cruising speeds is just slightly louder than stock, which makes it perfect for cars that are driven daily. You can find more info on this system at the link below. Let us know if we can answer any questions!

The sound of an American muscle car or V8 sports car is nothing to do with rice or anything thats not American

I love the sound of my Magnaflows except when they are droning. They seem perfect. When you get on it they sound awesome. When cruising down the highway they are not loud at all.

When I get some time I'm going to research the droning again. Seems like I remember finding something about 1 or 2 3" washers welded in (one on ea. side). If I can get rid of the drone it will sound perfect all the time.

Resonators on a 90? What are you refering to as a resonator on a 90. The 92's on up, I believe have a resonator, but I'm not aware of any resonator on the L98's.

Ricers are trying to sound like some huge engine has been stuffed in it. Even some American muscle cars are getting into piping the engine noise to make you think it has power. I'm not sure I see much of a difference in principle other than one car is made by Honda and the other by GM.

Some folks call them precats which I think is an error. They are located in the front Y pipe, one on each side. My '74 with the original factory exhaust also has them. They're about half again as big as a coffee can.

I removed my precats on my 87 coupe with L98, still too quiet. What if I took off my main cat. And put true dual pipes to the back. How much louder does it get with no cat. Up here in Canada where I live we can run without cats.....My corvette sounds like a k-car with what I have. I have magna flow mufflers on the back..thx...ol vette
