Wow, that was easy to pull the fuel pump! I also got the tank drained, and while the old gas was siphoning out I pulled the spark plug boots, then hit the plugs with Freeze-Off just to be safe.

I also discovered this vacuum line on the driver's side. It attaches to the charcoal canister(?) in the left corner behind the bumper, but where should it attach on the engine?

I have a few updates from this weekend:

First, I installed the battery. The "security" light in the center display flashes, and depending on how I hold/press/turn the key I also get the "check engine" message and buzzer. However I do not have any power windows/mirrors/seats, and the radio displays "1:00" if I turn it on, but then goes back out & doesn't do anything else. I checked all the fuses & cleaned the contacts, what else should I check?

I also confirmed the engine is seized, so I have it soaking with MMO and will begin working it gradually to try to free it. I don't think it's too serious, given the intake was clean & everything was sealed on it while it was parked.

My 73 was a similar buy, sitting neglected in the back yard in the winter weather with a cracked windshield for several years before the owner decided to part company. It took several years and a lot of TLC to bring it to its current state, which is parade quality. Nice find. Good luck. and Welcome

I know you have more important things but that line goes under the linkage to a tee (3 way)vacume coupling should be under there.

I hope to be able to re-cover the wheel with new leather(or suede).

I discovered mud wasps are dormant all winter & hatch in the spring, so I have a couple months to get this out of the garage & cleaned up or I might find a swarm someday.
Yeah, the hatch area was a mess.

I'm not sure what the chassis date is(I suppose there's a way to decode it?), but the seats were dated 1/29/85.
Not exactly the method of have chosen, but it seems to be working.
I was a bit surprised there were no koi swimming back here.

Water, water everywhere...
The hard-surfaces cleaned up pretty well. I'll use some carpet cleaner before putting the seats back in.

The engine bay didn't have as much debris as the hatch, but you can tell it was parked under a tree for a while.

I cleaned this ground while I had the battery out.

My hi-tech gas siphon.
The tank had over 3.5-gallons in it. It didn't smell like varnish, so it wasn't too old.
There was a bit of sediment left in the tank.
But it cleaned up fine.
Working the MMO into each cylinder. It looks like someone took my engine to a frat-party.
I cleaned & repaired the sending unit while the pump assembly was out.
New AC Delco pump installed & ready to go in once I get a new gasket.
Mocking up a tool to span 2 of the harmonic balancer bolts, so I can get more leverage & rock the engine both directions.

I'm looking forward to update to this thread. I love seeing life brought back into cars that other people have given up on. Congrats. If yours is anything like mine, you and corvettecentral.com, junkyards, and ebay are about to become best friends.

Clean all the connectors as you go and put some dielectric grease on them or you will have to keep cleaning them. Good Luck with the engine. If a battery is connected don't use a wire brush.

I have a couple questions for you guys - how should the hatch weatherstripping be oriented, and what should I use to adhere it? It seems short, do I stretch it to fit?

Make sure the channels are cleaned really well then use 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive if needed. If you need to buy weatherstips go to Wilcox and get the USA made rear hatch weatherstrip.

It's eat seeing a really rough car brought back to life. Best of luck and keep up with pics!

The orientation looks right. Remove the weatherstrip, then glue the corners. Let the adhesive thoroughly cure, then re-install the strip. Install the corners FIRST and about 10 - 12 inches from the corners, so you minimize the stress on the glued corners. Then stretch the CENTERS of the top and rear areas as you install the strip. Adhesive should not be necessary.

If you're looking for a stronger weatherstrip adhesive, get some Betamax U-418 or U-428 from a windshield shop. That stuff is really strong, and will stay flexible! The 428 needs to be warmed up first (about 200*f).

A couple updates:

I have the hatch weatherstripping reattached & the hatch opens/closes fine.

I discovered there was water in the floorboards deep enough to submerge the driver's power seat rail motors, and they look too damage to be saved(to me), so I think I'll look for a manual seat rail instead.

I got the car up on stands, and after fighting a couple of the keyed lugs got the wheels off. Then I pulled apart the left-front brakes. Not sure yet if I'm going to rebuild or replace the calipers yet.

I also discovered the suspension bushings are shot, so I'll be ordering a full poly kit too.

Using a prybar on the flywheel tonight I was able to get the tiniest bit of backward rotation from the engine, but only once, then it wouldn't move either direction.

More pics!

You can see the seat motors were submerged at some point.
I also got the passenger seat(formerly the driver's seat) reinstalled.
I started trying to clean the armatures, but I'm not sure they, or the magnets, can be saved.
Here's the damage to one of the magnets.

If you have the broken pieces of that power seat motor, just glue it back together with some "crazy glue" (cyanoacrylate).
