If you had gas fumes build up in the engine compartment and then a spark or flame....you will get one hell of an explosion followed by the fire. The damage shown is fire, little evidence of an explosion.

well shittt how crazy that I started a fire extinguisher thread not long ago:

Not that an extinguisher would help w/ the actual explosion but maybe a to prevent the fire from spreading to the house. Looks like they did that n put it out fast.
What was it a battery explosion? Why exactly? Chemical reaction from old *** battery? Leak and spark ignition?

You have to see if the odds favor an explosion or not. 1 in a million and I don't care. 1 in 10,absolutely.

I used to be a firefighter and dealt with a few car fires. When cars burn there are always little "explosions" as it burns. Tires are the main thing that go with a big pop but other things too make for entertaining fireworks.

It's only entertaining when it isn't my car.

Low electrolyte. Room for gas to collect. Plates shorted. Boom
Not a common problem, but it does happen.

A few more pics of the engine compartment and the battery location might just confirm this to be the cause.

IIRC, when gas prices were up due to Katrina (about $4.60 or so), they were trying to get rid of their trucks and SUVs only to find out that many others had beaten them to it. More than one Hummer that was upside down has been known to have spontaneous combustion.
Bunch of idiots started trading in their old pickup that is paid for and get a new or newer car that cost more to insure, took a bath on the "gas guzzler" and a new car payment all to lessen the sticker shock at the pump.

But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
I had to put her six feet under
And I can still hear her complain
I used to love her, Oo, yeah
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Oo, yeah
But I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard
Oh yeah, Oo yeah, whoa, oh yeah
I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
She bitched so much, She drove me nuts
And now I'm happier this way, yeah
Whoa, oh yeah
I used to love her
But I had to kill her

I had to put her, Oo, six feet under
And I can still hear her complain
