Oil/Air Filter Brand Preference
Hey guys. I've read multiple threads about synthetic vs. conventional (dino) oil. I run Mobil One full synthetic in my new cars, but I think I'm gonna stick with dino oil in my 91 C4. That being said, what brands do you guys prefer and why? Conventional Havoline gunked up my 2000 Dodge Ram, so I will be avoiding it. Also, does everyone run K&N air filters? If not what do you run?

I have tried many combinations in my vehicles especially in my 97 Range Rover. To relive some chatter from lifters. My favorite combo isn't expensive but it seems to work best.
So for Corvette and Range Rover Valvoline Maxlife synthetic blend and Fram Toughguard filter. Corvette also gets a can of STP for zinc its an 85. Walmart like $22 dollars.

I cannot agree with you on Synthetic vs Dino. I have been using Synthetic in all my vehicles including my Bikes for over 20 years.
I used to use K&N oil filters but when they started manufacturing in Mexico the Quality really went down so I switched. I now use Mobil1 or GM. I did like the socket on the K&N.

I use M1 synthetic and fram Toughguard in my 2014 Dodge Ram and my wife's Ford Edge. Seems to work fine. I'm hesitant to use Synthetic in the C4 though, mainly because I have read on here that it can cause the aging seals to leak.

I've used fram for more than 20 years in all my cars and never had a problem. I aso only use Mobil1.I read that some people don't like fram but it works fine for me.My wifes last car had 286K on it when it was hit. We got it new and fram and M1 from the beginning.

I use a WIX filter and Mobil 1 5-30 but am thinking of a switch to Castrol 10-40 "BMW M" oil which is what I run in my ZF6's

I mostly only use Synthetic.
I do have a Motorhome with a Cummins 8.3 ISC Diesel Engine about 22 Qts for the oil change. I use Regular Dino oil as per the Cummins requirement. I have a shop do it nowhere to dispose of the oil or deal with the sheer size. I only have the oil changed once a year which comes out to 6K miles. I also have the oil tested then.

I use Nappa Gold filters Which are made by Wix. A great price and quality at under 6 bucks. For the '90 L98 it gets Castrol GTX 10W30. If the General wanted me to use a synthetic they would have said so but they didn't. Their engineering talent waited for the next gen to go to syn. JMTC

If you watch your oil pressure, oil temperature and coolant temperature gauges you should see that synthetic oils do make everything run a bit cooler. Dino or synthetic oils are fine but you still need to keep the same change schedule.
Wix filters for the win.

Very early formulations of synthetic oil DID cause leaks but since then manufacturers have added seal conditioning agents. You can use the syn oils with confidence.

Cant resist throwing my two cents in....
Mobil 1 and Fram for me. That was what the guy who taught me most about cars used so I just stuck with it.
I also stick with OEM recommendations for oil. Synthetic where it was designed for it and dino where it wasn't. Honestly I think synthetic will perform better in extremes and can go longer between changes but for my pleasure car I don't think it's worth the added cost. I end up changing the oil any time I do almost anything on the motor so it gets changed way more often than the recommended intervals anyway.
Having said that, if I made my living with my vehicle I wouldn't use anything but synthetic. Kind of like my tools, if I made my living with them I would buy Snap On instead of Craftsman.
