Default I want to build a custom side-exit exhaust...I don't think I can though

I was looking at it. Even if I split it into straight pipes out to the sides DIRECTLY behind the cat...it'd still be REAL close to hitting the tires. It'd sure look and probably sound cool though. Run a 3" from the cat, into a pair of 2½" pipes pointing straight out the side, have them set right in front of the rear tires, with a 3" tip on each side. I'm gonna see if I can't do it with a Flowmaster Y-pipe from Summit ($25) and some mandrel bent pieces of Stainless Steel.

Glad to hear you are considering a custom project. Good to see folks considering things out of the norm....

Yeah...when I get my Z, it'll DEFINATElY have custom side exhaust. I'm TRYING to see if I can get it to work on this one too though. (Then sell my Dynomax Rear Y and muffler elims)

That's how mine is now, both ends go into the side exhaust covers, did have to remove the main cat though and replace it with a race muffler. Sounds very cool but am going to remove it. The side pipe covers make the vette so low that I am hitting the road all the time. Oklahoma roads suck.

[I just removed the covers and cut the side pipes off so the pipes go almost straight down right after the muffler (where the cat used to be) and must say it's very loud inside, can't wait to get the new rear y-pipe. Don't mind loud but it feels like your head wants to explode so be forewarned if the pipes don't come out past the body a little you might not like it.]

Yeah..if I could remove my main cat, then I'd replace it with a race muffler and be done with it..but living in CA means I gotta pass SMOG CHECK II. Ohh well..Too bad the cat is so far back there...maybe if I ever build a new motor for THIS vette, I'll put dual bullet cat's on a set of LT Headers and then just run it from there.

Just be careful not to overheat the fuel lines on the passenger side and the brake lines on the driver's side.

I've actually thought about this for the last couple of days. Nothing major, just the idea of side exhaust kinda like the Lightning would be cool

Think about adapting a road-racing set from a C3? Or at least go for that look?

I've looked at the Lawrence "Side Effects" kit, and decided that they just don't look quite right on a C4. Something about the leading edge where they come out from under the car- too much gap between the wheel and the start of the pipe cover.

I am pretty sure they already make a C4 sidepipe setup, infact I have a pic of a C4 with side exhaust on my harddrive...

It's not gonna be sidepipes, it's going to look more like the Lightning's Exhaust. Just a pipe going straight from the center of the car, out. (Perpendicular to the rest of the exhaust system)

I though about taking my stock exhaust with the mufflers already cut off and putting that on the car with turn downs.

Give GHL Performance a call and talk to them about it. They built a custom side exhaust system for an LT4 down here and it sounds incredible! And from what I understand it added 15 RWHP on the dyno...that came from both GHL, the owner, and the builder of the car. Their number is...(480)655-0935

You know, after installing the system on my car I do believe it's possible. The one Item I would consider is to stray away from round exhaust...oval, which would have to be custom fabricated would allow for the clearance you would need. If you ever get the chance to see the Side Effects exhaust system you will see what I mean. The pipes after the cats turns into almost a rectangle to allow for maximum clearance.

Good luck with the project, it sounds like a great idea!

Eric

The lines are very close but I didn't seem to have a problem and it sounded very cool. When I took the side covers off I had the pipe still comming out the side and must say it didn't look right, even with some tips put over the pipes I didn't like it. I'm now waiting for a new rear y-pipe so I can go back to the way it was. I have a single large dynomax race muffler and can spin the wheels at will after the main cat was removed.

I'd like to have a set of real sidepipe headers like I had on my 70 Vette..... they had that neat sound that was even neater with a radical cam :seeya

I worked on a SpeedVisionGT car that had a side exhaust, no sidepipes.

It had a side skirt, and they cut a hole in it for the exhaust.

Basically it took a 90deg turn on both side right after where the resonator was.

BTW I measured it out, sidepipes from a Midyear will fit.
Getting the exhaust to exit at the front is the problem, the frame it there.
thats why the SideEffects exit at the back turn into the muffler and the turn around again inside the muffler to exit.
