The 85 is Finally Painted!!!! Long Post/ w Pics
I have finally finished painting the 85. It has been a long haul due to many outside activities and the Zaino biz keeping me very busy.
I used Dupont Chroma and found the paint extremely easy to work with and very forgiving.
Here is the process I went through:
Rough sanded using a 1/3 paper wide finishing sander and 360 grit. I also hand sanded but used 400 around the corners and curves.
Check out the partially sanded hood. You can see areas where the clear coat was peeling.
Here is a pic of the car rough sanded before I did the final 400 sand.
I built a booth out of PVC pipe in the garage and covered it with clear plastic. This became quite an interesting piece of architecture for the neighborhood I had a small fan in front pushing air, and 2 large fans in the back pulling. All the fans had furnace filters on them to catch "stuff." That system moved air fairly well.
I did a second 400 wet sand, then taped and papered everything that needed to be covered.
I primered and wet sanded with 600 until the overall finish looked very uniform, smooth. Gave it a wash with dawn and dried it and blew water out of the cracks and crevices with an air gun, then tacked it twice
I painted the bottom color first. I put on 3 base coats, letting each coat flash(dry) for 10 minutes. Working with the dark silver was pretty easy, no runs and the paint looked very uniform in color. I waited 30 minutes before I took the paper off the upper portion of the body, and taped it to the lower portion. Don’t worry it was taped to the inside of the lip protruding from the rocker panel, so the tape never touched fresh paint.
I tacked the upper portion twice and mixed the silver base for the upper portion.
This paint was much more difficult to work with. While it was easy to spray, it was very easy to create “tiger stripes.” These are stripes that appear when the overlap is not good enough to cover the previous pass and a line shows. I had to work the spray pattern and material flow in order to get rid of them. I still had a few, but we will get to that in a minute. I sprayed 3 coats of silver base, letting it flash 10 minutes a coat.
Clear coat is much thicker than base, and I did not have the gun set properly. When I started spraying the clear it had horrible orange peel and was going on "dry". I worked with the gun controls and got the flow better but still not right. I did 3 medium coats, but was not happy with the out come. I figured I could sand it flat and get the look needed.
After an hour of letting the clear dry, I pulled the paper and tape. The next day I started the wet sand process with 600. The orange peel was pretty bad in some spots, so 600 was needed to take it down in my lifetime. I found a pretty big run on the drivers side. While sanding it down, I broke through the base coat. Once the paint was flat, I switched to 1000 wet sand. While sanding I discovered horrible stripes and some bazaar looking clearcoat on the backside around the gas door.
I decided sanding wasn’t going to solve the clearcoat problem in this area, so I set the car up for a repaint. I sprayed a coat of adhesion primer beyond the areas I wanted to fix.
I spent a lot of time and paint getting the spray pattern I was looking for. When I felt it was correct, I painted the affected areas, blending the new base spray into the old. This was a gun/spray technique more than anything else. It looked great!!! I setup for the clear and again spent a lot of time and paint getting the desired spray pattern. I sprayed 3 coats of clear and was extremely happy with the outcome. No orange peel, very shiny and a perfect base coat blend. The next day I was able to wet sand with 1500 right off the bat to clean up the dirt and small nubs that showed up. I then wet sanded with 2000 and was amazed at how quickly the imperfections disappeared.
After the repair dried for 12 hours, I buffed the whole car with 3M Fine Cut Polishing compound. This was the crowning touch. The paint, even though very “swirly” is incredibly flat and shiny. My next step is to use 3M Swirl Mark remover to get rid of the swirl marks, and then Zaino. The picture does not do it justice. I am very happy with the outcome. This was a tremendous amount of work, especially the wet sanding. It seemed to go on forever.
Here are a couple of pics after rubbing out with the 3M compund.
The drivers door repainted/blended to fix the break through, from the rear to roughly the middle of the door. At any angle in all kinds of light the blend cannot be found.

Glad to hear that you liked using the product. I used to sell it.
My 76 is done in ChromaLusion which is a ChromaPremier product.
What clear did you use?
You will REALLY like it when it is buffed out.

DaBo, I used the 3600S Low VOC Clear.
Thanks for the compliments. I am amazed every time I look at it. The difference is unbelievable. Even neighbors that just drive their cars are stopping by making comments on how well it turned out.
Of course they may also be excited that I finally removed the neighborhood blight when I painted it. The car sat for about 3 weeks out in front, a touch worse looking than the second picture. Neighbors called it the Dalmatian car
GRX, I did talk to the shop that fixed my C5, but they seemed to be a bit flaky and non-committal. I really wanted to try this myself. If I add up all the hours I spent futzing and sanding, it might have been cheaper to have it done. Had I shot the clear correctly the first time and not had to sand my brains out, I would have beaten a shop $$$wise by quite a bit.

Great Job. Do you have any pictures of the booth you created?
Also, what equipment did you use? The clear is peeling of my Firebird and I am thinking of doing this myself.
Thanks,
BILL
