Oil change frequency? Miles or Months?
I use Mobil1 in my '89 coupe. I only drive the car about 1500-2500 miles a year. I do autocross the car in about 12 events per year, a couple of those are a bit higher speed held at a track not parking lot based. :D
The question is what should determine the time to change the oil? and filter? I'm usually very good on all vehicles doing this myself every 3k miles in my daily driver. But with good synthetic what should be the etermining factor?

Since you don't drive it much, I'd suggest changing before you put it up for the winter. You don't want any acids that have formed in the oil to sit in the engine over the storage period. I use oil analysis and run my Mobil1 out to 7500 miles between changes.

Since I pretty much do limited driving year around, I tend to change every 3-4 months.
Since you live in a warm climate I think you could get by with every 6mo.
Check the service interval for your car.

I change mine at 3000 miles or 3 months..cheap insurance.
With synthetic oil changing it every 3k miles is just a waste of money. Unless you're still under warranty, changing it sooner is just foolish. Don't hide behind statements like, "cheap insurance". Synthetics can go much much further and provide much better protection than with dino oils. 10k miles is a more realistic number but, if you must change early then go around 6k miles. Or just wait until your oil life monitor tells you when it's time.
When will this 3k miles myth end? Those days are gone! The newer oils are far superior than when 3k miles were the norm. Engines have changed as well. I used to own a truck and changed its oil every 6k miles with dino oil. It was still running great until I sold it at 128,000 miles and it didn't have any engine oil related problems.

I work for a government agency that has a fleet well over 180,000 vehicles that we own and lease, and our policy for oil changes is every 7500 miles.

If I was driving this car in a more typical pattern like 8K-12K/year I would change the oil every 3K-5K with Mobil 1.
The real question is based on the light use pattern of driving the car about 1500 mile a year if I changed it at 3K that is two years  I not sure that is right. But changing every 3 months might only be 300-500 miles
That is the question

The logic seems to be right, but even when I change Mobil 1 Synthetic every 3000 miles the oil comes out as dark as dino oil in my 71' 4x4 at 3000 miles :skep:, so for peace of mind I'll keep changing at 3k :yesnod:

Shylor...apples and oranges are both fruit and trucks and vettes both have engines but do you really think that is a fair comparison ?...btw, I drag race my vette 3 times a month, every month and it is my daily driver and I'm a hair away from 100,000 miles...I say again...cheap insurance... :D

Re: Oil change frequency? Miles or Months? (Dolfan)
I run synthetic in both my cars and I change mine out every 6000-8000 miles. I've had no issues so far on the Mustang (I've only had the corvette for about 2 months now) and a few times I've pushed 10,000 between changes. From my understanding synthetic is less prone to heat breakdown than normal refined oil. With the low milage your doing per year and the type of miles (autocrossing at least once a month it seems), I'd think every 3-4 months would be a good choice. I've know racers that change out after every autocross, but that seems a bit drastic. Its not like these are dragsters that need a rebuild after every few runs.

I change mine on the ruby twice a year. The car sees about 1500 miles a year but it's sit's a lot so I do it to be safe.
My daily driver Z06 gets the oil changed about every 2500 - 3000. I figure it's so easy to do it's stupid not to keep it fresh

My Mobil 1 has about 1000 miles on this oil change and is darn near black...of course the car is black so it must be rubbing off or something. Ya think? :seeya
