Default ZF6 fluid???

I just went to the GM dealership and got 3 quarts of part number 1052931 to change my 6 speed transmission fluid along with some limited slip additive for the rear end. When I got home I noticed that the limited slip additive said GM and the correct part number on it, but the transmission fluid is Saturn Manual Transmission Lubricant. The part number on the receipt is correct but this doesnt seem right. Is this the wrong fluid?
They were also out of the gear lubricant for the rear axle. Is there anything else I could use or should I stick with the GM stuff? By the way, my car is a 92.
Thanks,
Ron

Your Zf-6 speed actually takes the exact same oil your motor does. :yesnod:

I have always put Mobil 1 5w-30 in my Zf and this is what ZFDoc.com recommends. The newest thing people have been putting in them is Castrol 10w-60 which you can only get at a BMW dealership. This is the only fluid ZFdoc reccomends over the Mobil 1. :yesnod:

In my ZF I use the BMW M-5 oil. You have to go to go to their parts window and ask for M-5 motor oil. Lots and lots of people use it. I use it all my cars. The PH is good and you will see a little better shifting.

I called GM and they told me that it was the same stuff as the GM transmission fluid, but I just bought Mobil 1 5w-30 to change my oil with and would rather just use that. Would there be a problem going to synthetic? I just bought the car and am not sure what was being used before, but if it wasnt synthetic I wanted to make sure it was ok. I have 96K miles on the car. Just dont want any leaks or anything. Thanks for the help!

How often does this fluid need to be changed and how difficult is it to do? Where is the drain plug?

Ok, I talked to Bill at zfdoc.com and he recommended that I use BMW P/N 07510009420 (10w-60) oil like someone else that responded to me suggested. I am going to go with that.
I just read on zfdoc.com that it is recommended to change the transmission oil at 10,000-12,000 mile intervals.
Thanks for the help everyone.

I used the gm oem fluid. I have heard it is motor oil with some additives.

I'll bet you haven't changed it yet because you haven't replied yet and said what a bicth it was to get the fill plugs out.... It took me about a 100 ft lbs
to break them loose.

Make sure you take the fill plug out first.

PS I changed mine at 23 k and it didn't do much for shifting.

If that's what you have in your tranny you better get it out! Mobile 1 is NOT the right oil. It's not a rated gear oil. You ZF6 needs a GL rated oil. Here's a quote direct from ZF's webpage:

ZF only recommends the following lubricant for S6-40 transmissions. The GM oil (available from GM with part number 1052931) and the Castrol Synthetic Formula RS 10W60 (available from BMW with part number 0751009420).

Read for yourself on at this link:

http://www.zf-group.com/am/pc/pt/ampcpt03.phtml

And Bill (ZFDoc) does not recommend Mobile 1. Here's a snip from his web page:

"I was told by Jeff Henning, Warranty Administrator of ZF Industries North America, that Engineering of ZF Industries in Germany determined that the BMW imported Castrol (RS superceded by TWS) 10W-60 oil was the recommended alternative to the (GM P/N 1052931) factory-fill oil for use in the ZF S6-40 transmission. "

Bill goes on with the detailed test results.

This is an expensive transmission to be using the wrong oil.
