Default Transmission Boot Question

My boot has come loose under the plastic cover on the console on a '96 6-speed. Can someone suggest how to remove the console cover so I can re-attach? Thanks for your help.

Doesn't anyone have a suggestion about this? I don't want to break the cover, but can't find how the cover is removed.

If it is like my 90, there are 2 nuts in the console and 1 under the ash tray that have to come out. The ones in the console may be under the fabric. Take them out and start to work the cover up slowly. There are also some clips but moving slowly it will come up. Good luck

On the '96, you need to remove the center console lid first (3-4 hex head screws). Then you can remove the plastic shifter console. One screw hiding under the center console carpet, another under the ashtray.

Don't forget to remove the shift **** and disconnect the lighter and hatch release button.

All that is to get the center console off. You you are replacing the leather boot you will have to use a very small allen wrench to get the reverse lever off. If you look closely at the shifter shaft, you will see a small hole near the reverse lever, that is where the screw is. You will need something like a 1.5mm allen wrench or something close to that. I bought a cheap set of allen wrenches and it was one of the smaller ones.

The reverse lockout was dropped around 94(?) so he won't have to deal with that.
