Radio DIN size question
Dumb question, but after looking through a bunch of radio-related posts I don't understand something: It looks to me like the radio in my '89 is double DIN sized. But, for example, the Pioneer radios "for Corvettes" are 1.5 DIN.
Why aren't their Corvette radios double DIN? Or does a double DIN radio not fit in the Corvette? My Bose system is slowing dying and I'd love to scrap it for a conventional setup, but I'm trying to figure out what would fit without having to tear up the bezel or having the unit stick an inch out from the dash.
Thanks all, hate asking questions like this but it seems there's more to the fitment issue than meets the eye.

Your car is 1.5 din. On that note, forget the 1.5 din units. Especially the ones in corvette magazines. A few of them sell $175 pioneer 1.5 units for $500+! That should be... illegal.
On another note, companies rarely upgrade their 1.5 units. You get old technology. Get a single din unit, and a metra kit for it, you'll be much happier in the long run. Even if it doesn't fill the whole slot.

Check out the Pioneer DEH-P47DEH for features at Crutchfiled; then locate it at a lower cost.
I have a similar but older unit in the IROC and it is a great unit and just plugged right in, with the wiring adapter harness.

I agree with Kale on this on. The DIN units are so much more advanced. The 1.5 and dbl DIN units are the bastard step children of the car audio business.
When they update them, the price does go through the roof.
Avoid the Corvette vendors, they will rip you off in no time flat.
I highly recommend Alpine head units.

Point taken, I'll stop looking at the 1.5 DIN units
Followup question on the 1 DIN models, though: Crutchfield makes it sound like most (if not all) of the 1 DIN units will stick out 1" from the dash. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Are some units shorter than others so they'll fit without sticking out? Or do I just need to remove the back of the existing bracket so the unit can mount deeper into the dash? Or should I just prepare myself for a radio sticking out of the dasy?
Thanks again,
Ben
