The Tech1a had a cat5 style network plug jack in the side for additional probes that either read or outputted voltages that you would probe into a circuit on the car and use for a prompted step by step diagnostic.

Some late tech1's are tech1a's, but still labeled as tech1's (look for the probe jack). When I had mine rebuilt at the service center, they put on a tech1a label along with the new keypad overlay.

Ask to see the picture of the right side. Also really curios as to what the giant module is for...for the most part you only need the mass storage one though.

This is a TECH 1, not a TECH 1A. No additional jacks on the side. As for the larger module, it's an RS232 I/F adapter. The pic below the adapter is a closeup of what it is.

Functionally the 1 and 1A are 100% the same, and all modules interchange between the two. With the right adapters and cartridge, both can be used on OBDII as well.

I believe the RS232 adapter allows the Tech1 to print like a Tech1A has the capability "built in". This would allow you to do dual side by side diagnostics and print the results for comparison etc. F8 should print when using it I believe. It's been a very long time.
