Datamaster Help!!
I have the AutoProm from Craig moates which allows me to pass through data from OBD port to computer. The problm I have is in the Comm Ports selection. On the 'device manager' of my laptop, the comm port that the latop sees my connected to is Comm 4 or 5. those are the only ports I have available on the back of the computer. Now, when I go to select one of those ports on the datamaster software, port 4 is not available for selection, only port 3. And port 5 is not even listed. Do you have any ideas what may be the problem? What if I had TunerPro running in the background, would that cause a problem?
The car is a 1990 L98 with the stock computer. Laptop is new Dell with windows XP.

Something is definitely wrong there. But you can try the easy way out and trick it. Device Manager Goto Ports, then get the Properties, select port settings, then Advanced, at the bottom where it says COM port number change it to 1 and see if it works. The COM port for 1 should be I/O range 03F8-03FF, and IRQ 4. Good Luck

I had the same problem but I was working on a 95 lt1. I bought a new Dell Inspiron 1000 and was useing a usb to serial port adaptor with the ALDL cable from AKM Cables. Datamaster wouldn't let me choose the port I needed to.
I used up all my 20 free runs trying to figure it out so I sent the dell back and got a laptop with a serial port. Good luck, and if you figure it out I would be interested in knowing how.

I'm using the USB-Serial adapter from Moates and the driver downloaded from his website. Open the Hardware Device Manager, click & expand the Ports Group. Open the Properties window for the USB Serial Port and click on the Port Settings tab, then click on the Advanced Button. Here you will find the control to reassign the COM Port Number for this device.

Well, I did not figure out what the problem was exactly.....
I plugged in the auto prom after setting the switch to "pass-through". Then I turned the computer on. Then ONLY opened datamaster and COM4 was available. Selected it and was then able to datalog. I then opened TunerPro RT and it could not detect the Autoprom until I closed the Datamaster program (and the same went to TunerCats TunerRT)
I am guessing that my problem was that I had the TunerPro RT linked to the Autoprom befor I opened the datamaster program, but ?????
Oh well, there went 5 of my first 20 free logs.

that had confused me b/c I can have both TunerPro RT and TunerRT open at the same time and communicate with the AutoProm with either. But with the Datamaster, I have to have all the other programs off, and restart the computer opening datamaster first.

On most of the newer computers ,(laptops) you need to turn off all inferred devices in the manager.
Turn your com port off for the modem.Restart the computer and make sure the USB is hooked to the system.
On some systems you need a 10 ohm resistor between the comunication port on the ADL on the car.
Radio shack has them.
