Default bin vs def vs mask???

I've programmed many chips for my 92 several years ago and now I'm trying to get back into it but it seems I've forgetten everything. There are so many new and cool programming tools available now.
What is the difference between the def file and the bin and a mask???

A mask is a def file. It defines all the parameters you can change. The bin is the file, you burn to the chip.
