Default Using '92-95 LT1 engine (no ODBII) in '96 Vette (ODBII)

I know there are several big differences between the various years of the LT1 engine. But I have a '96 which is the first year of ODBII in the vette and also the last year of the LT1. I need to replace the engine and finding a '96 with the right miles at the right price may be difficult.

So, right now I'm looking at a '95 Corvette LT1 including ECU and all belt driven accessories, headers, intake, etc. It seems '95 and '96 were very similar with the exception of ODBII. What special things would be necessary to install the '95 engine in my '96. Would I retain my '96 ECU? Install some sensors?

I won't be doing the work. But I want to make sure I get everything needed.

Thanks for the help.

I was just reading a "LT1 History" page (http://www.hpsalvage.com/lt1.htm) and it says '96 also had a crank position sensor added. That sounds like a fairly big deal from what I know of those senors on newer cars.

Would the opti-spark, crank-shaft reluctor ring, and timing cover from the '96 engine swap to the '95 to address this?

I did find a thread from a guy on an impala forum that did exactly what I'm looking to do. He wanted to retain the ODBII on his '96 car with an older '95 LT1. http://www.impalassforum.com/vBullet...d.php?t=263126
It looks like a good deal of work added to the engine swap. Can I just use the '95 ECU and not have to bother with any of this?

Depends on the year of the "92-'95 LT1 engine".

An early, Batch fire LT1 would need a new timing cover, opti drive, opti, crank sensor and reluctor wheel.

A later LT1 that is sequential and has the later opti should be a drip in replacement, provided you use the OBD II ECM and harness.

I don't think you will have any issues at all, provided you strip the 95 engine to a bare long block and then transfer all the 96 specific parts onto it.

If it's a 96 LT4, the 95 LT1 heads won't match up to the LT4 intake manifold so you'd have to reuse your 96 LT4 heads; also the LT4 stock cam (not "hot cam") is more aggressive than the 95 LT1 so a cam swap would probably be in order

If its a 96 LT1 then the 95 heads should match up to the 96 LT1 intake manifold and the 95 cam should be the same, or close enough to the 96 LT1 cam to warrant reuse of the 95 LT1 cam.

It should not be a big issue, you need the timing chain cover and sensor from the 1996 and add that to the 1995 engine. After that it should be the same.

The 1996 OBDII knock sensors are also different.
