Default what is needed to go 2.59-3.54 dana 36...

What do I need to swap my 2.59s for 3.54s in my 1996 auto lt1 dana 36?
I am going to use precision gears and then cryo them. I will buy parts remove carrier and take them to a place to set the gears up and then install the carrier myself.

I mean i see the zip GP is $750 but they use richmond gears and I want percisions gears and I wanna save $.

I really want an damn dana 44 but i mean 1500 plus another 300 for gears and then Install myself about $1900 ahhhh!!!!

the reason for wanting to go to lower gears is so I can go to a larger cam
thanks alot your friend

Think of it this way, a dana 44 already has 3.45 gears... why go to 3.54?

Sure, the D44 is pricier, but I would be saving my money on the D36 and invest in a stock D44 and leave it at that for a while.

Paul Newman's Car Creations (not the actor) is now making D44s.

By the time you spend the money on the gears and pay for install, you may as well get on the ZIP GP. It will cost about the same. The gears are around $200-$250, the install kit is $100-$150, and the labor will cost close to $400-$450. Or you can look for someone selling a D36 batwing/carrier with the gear ratio you want and all you have to do is swap the D36 unit which will be a lot cheaper.

The 3.54 gears are thinner and not as strong as the 2.59.
What I would do is buy the bat wing that has the pads to hold the carrier in place better then the stock bat wing and maybe spend the money on the gears.

Have patience and go directly to the D44. Granted, you want gears to match your powerband of the cam you have, but for the interim, your 2.59 gears will be just fine. I went to D36 3.54's and someday I'll be going to a D44 with 3.45 gears too (when something breaks back there).

Hey Sean; Your drawing conclusions about a lot of things regarding the Dana 36 3:54 gears. Why don't you call Justin Abbott at 1-800-962-9632 Ext. 256, and explain to him exactly what your looking to do, and be guided by his expertise. Moreover, you might be able to take advantage of the GB, and have the exact gears you are looking for, as ZIP does not use Richmond gears exclusively. Good luck!

I dare ya to post that over in their Zip GP Thread.
They freak out if you say anything remotely negative about their GP

haha i wouldnt do that. I mean its ture though dana 36s r only rated up to like 400 hp and I plan to go past that!

I mean if i could do it for $500 myself I prob would! and then later on sell my dana 36 and then get the dana 44.

does anyone know if i would need a different carrier than my stock one?

if yes then i wont do it if no then i might consider doing it myself.

What are you running now 2.59's ? If so, some gear vendors make a "thick gear" that will work with the 2 series carrier

Call them. You have a 2 series carrier. Those gears should work.

RING & PINION 3.31 RATIO - STANDARD THICKNESS GEARSET - Fits cases that do not have 2.73 or numerically lower gears

Thats means you need a 3 series carrier

they didnt answer someone else try!

so for a new one its like $300 plus $152 plus say $30 for ship plus install kit $100
so like $580 ish unless we can find a cheap used one and that could know off about $150 or so..

so $430-$580 plus someone to set up the gears and rear lube!
not to mention not as low of a gear as the 3.54 so not as much worry I like this idea
infact if i can get the carrier soon Ill buy the gears tomm and get someone to set it up after i drag race the 19th!
