Tjwong Dyno 300-400 Hp?
NO, I didn't make that HP. 260 - 271 HP at the crank depending on the multiplier you use on the rear wheel numbers. Do I care? No, not really there are other factors and these are just numbers. I just started a mild build on my 20 year old 1985. AFR 180 ported street heads, Accel SuperRam (base only), 1.6 RR intake and 1.5 RR exhaust on a stock cam and bottom end. The HP will come later with a cam and additional exhaust work. It is still the fastest most enjoyable car I have owned and is faster than 95% of the cars on the road today, even at 20 years of age.
Let's back up. I searched the forum and found good things concerning Tom Wong (TJWONG) up in Vancouver. His answers to fellow forum members were always concise and informative. In February I bought the SuperRam base from him and had it shipped direct to California. In April I talked to Tom about a dyno tune and new chip. He indicated that he could probably coax a few more horses with a custom chip. After installing the heads/intake and getting the vet running and dialed in, I called him and made arrangements to be at his shop last Monday morning. I was headed for Seattle anyway, so the 10 hour drive to his shop really wasn't too far. In hindsight, I now would make the drive to just have him Dyno the car.
A slow start at his shop (dead radiator after 20 years) :o :o ! After we installed a new radiator, we put her on the Dyno. What a THRILL to be standing right next to the vet when Tom hit it and she strained against the hold downs, squatted down and roared! It is one thing to be in the driver's seat on the road and hit it, another to be standing 2-3 feet away and have your car come to life. My only regret was that I hadn't brought along a video camera to record the tune to show to my 26 year old son. Tom made the first pass and found that my Hypertech chip I had 43 degrees of advance and was reducing fuel causing the engine to run VERY LEAN. I had been fighting that "PING" for several years and tried everything from different fuels, octane additives and finally playing with the distributor advance. If you have a Hypertech chip and PING, it may not be your engine! Tom burned a new chip and made a new pass analyzing the results. He did that four times and made four passes and finally decided that the 3rd chip maximized the performance the most. What a MAJOR difference in performance. The 260-271 HP at the crank may not sound like much, but behind the wheel it is like night and day. Not only does the car get up and go when you get on it, but driving up from the Bay area I averaged 26.6 MPG before the TJWONG chip and 27.2 MPG after on a 800+ mile each way run. PERFORMANCE and MILEAGE all in one.
IF you are thinking about a mail order chip, forget it and go the extra mile to Tom Wong and do it right. But more important that just the chip and HP (if that is possible) you will meet a man that is very knowledgeable about corvettes and that you will end up calling your friend. In my case, Tom's friendship is more importand that the horsepower.
THANK YOU TOM FOR A JOB WELL DONE!!!

I wish he was closer to me. I have even offer to fly him to me just so he can tune my DFI.

TJWong is one of the many great people that contribute to this forum! He has helped me on more than one occasion too bad that he is soooo far away.

Tom seems to be one of the best people on this forum and never once have I seen him plug his business! I think he needs to at least have the biz name and phone # in his signature so people can order parts from him!

I have to agree with everyone here Tom's a great guy and the only person I trust to leave my 10 sec ride with, And it wouldn't be there without his tuning abilitys. And i know the feeling you mean when your cars straped to his dyno its a awsome feeling. I'm all for a dyno play day
