ZF 6 Speed for 86?
I see lots of threads where Keisler and Richmond transmissions have been swaooed in to replace the 4+3, but wouldn't hte simplest swao be a ZF from an 89 or newer?

They are all about the same, really... the ZF requires some cutting of the tranny tunnel...
However, you already have the 4+3, so most of the hard work has been done - pedals, D44, hydraulics, etc.
The ZF is the best tranny available, as far as I am concerned.

My 4+3 is also popping out of 2nd gear, that's why I'm looking at alternatives. The ZF seems logical considering it is a factory option and made for the car. I think I'll visit some auto wreckers and see what I can find.

Did a ZF-6 TRANSplant on my 84 Xfire. Whether you do a Keisler or ZF, you'll need to cut trans tunnel to remove shifter "bucket".
The swap changes the personality of your car. No longer will you need to worry about missed shifts and balky shifter. FWIW, if your motor is a 2pc rear main seal, I highly recommend the Fidanza 6speed conversion aluminum FW. And also do the B+M or Hurst shifter at the same time. You'll want to do a D44 for shorter gearing as well.

if anyone is interested ive got a fresh 4+3 sitting around. was built a few years ago and just never used. $2500
the price is no joke, but with that in mind i bet your thinking conversion. i dont blame you one bit. if you want it to remain original though, just let me know.

that had better include a new case... $2500 is steep... the going rates are about $1600 or so...
The other question, does that include a rebuild of the +3 part? Or just the 4 part?
If that is a total overhaul, both manual and powerglide parts, then yes, $2500 is about right.

A Keisler kit would be a better deal
As LD85 has listed out; a ZF swap will cost over $3000, you'll have to source the parts from multiple suppliers, pay shipping on each order and you'll still have a used tranny which is very expensive to rebuild.
The Keisler Perfect Fit 5 speed conversion is less expensive, stronger and has a good overdrive, and the Keisler T-56 6 speed would not cost much more, and it would have all new components, and it would also use a "Corvette Approved" tranny.
