Default l98 oil pressure.

was driving to work today and noticed the oil pressure would drop to 25psi at idle and the engine temps were 195. oil temp was 210. under throttle it would climb, though. at 65 mph my oil pressure was 61 psi at the same temps. should i be worried? i did a compression test last week and all cylinders were around 165psi. the car has 82,000 miles.

No problem. Heck, when my coolant gets to 220 my oil pressure can dip below 15 at idle and runs great

I've been told by many mechanics that the general rule of thumb for oil pressure is 10 psi for each 1000 rpm.

That seems a bit low don't it?

That would mean my Oil pressure would be around 6 or 7 PSI at idle?

or is that a reference for a minimum pressure?

I have never seen mine that low and would be concerned! Just for peace of mine I would inspect the oil, smell and look, on the dip stick. I would take off the oil fill cap and use a good light while the car was running to inspect the oil blowing around the head. I would carefully watch the oil pressure for awhile. Once I had a car that the cam freeze plug blew out. Around corners her oil pressure would drop real bad, then there was the oil smell. I milked her home ok, only two miles. She was down two quarts by then but still had two.

What year car anyways? I test drove an '87 T/A with the wife and that car had much lower oil pressure then mine. The person had owned the car since it was new off the lot and stated the oil pressure has always been the same. He is a GM factory worker so I trusted his observations.

Smokey Yunick's column in that stock car magazine he used to write for was my source for the 10lbs per 1000rpm rule of thumb. I trust Smokey.
