the dreaded "Anti Lock" warning message
It's been a long time...with no troubles...until today...
Went to Sears to pick up a scale...Started the 86 4+3 vert, and there was a "Bong!" (some kind of audible warning?)...WTF???...Then I noticed there was a light/message on the DIC..."Anti Lock"...
Drove it home, shut down, started up again...No message...Brakes seem fine, no loss of pressure...
Couple hours later, I started up to park it in the garage..."Anti Lock" message again...
So...What's the most common problem that trips this message???
Thank You!

one good thing about the abs it doesn't do anything to your brakes. you just my not have the abs working. mine was the pump relay which is right on top of the abs system, got one from napa for $30. to test remove the relay and run a jumper wire to 2 of the pins. but i can't remember which 2? do a search and you most likley find mine when i asked about it too.

same here
I have been trying to solve my problem for months now
The dealer told me it needed a front reluctor
i found the wire was shorted out
I also replaced both front sensors
Since i have 86 spindles in my 87 i needed to retrofit the later sensors
I noticed that when i have the rear wheels on jack stands then run the speed up to 10 - 20 mph and hit the brakes my motor kicks in and activates the system. The front wheels are static during this test.
I am asuming this is normal because it senses a lock up condition
Can you try yours to see what it does?
A mechanic told me the light should go on if the rears are truning without the fronts
not sure if that is correct or not
The early systems are different from all others
The 86 front sensors are discontinued
you may have to retrofit the 87 if you need them

Now I just have to *find* that booger...I have the convertible, and I don't ever recall seeing a binnacle behind the seats...although I do see the housing under the car...
(BTW, I did find your posts...)
I suspect my relay contacts are patina-ized from sitting unused...Same as my Harley...
So, thanks for the post!
...Actually, I was kind of expecting Scorp508 to post in response to this problem...Scorp has had everything that can go wrong with a Vette happen to him...sometimes more than once...

OK...After removing the Bose speaker cover, I see the Bose speaker and associated parts, including a glas cover holding them all together...That cover has a mix of rusty and new screws & washers...Hmmmm...Somebody has been here before (I've owned the car 7 years now)...
Taking this cover off and lifting the Bose crap out of the way, I can see the ABS pump, control unit, and lots of "stuff"...Attached to the control unit mounting bracket is a relay, with these markings:
12V 10A
0 332 512 006
BOSCH
..."Bosch"???...Not Delco???...Bosch says "AutoZone" to me!...Someone's changed this before!
There is a GM part number on the side -
1408 4083
My GM parts book says this is a -
RELAY, ELEK BRK CONT MOD
Ah, that sounds like what I want! I'll check NAPA and AutoZone later on to see if anyone has one!

I just got back from NAPA...Their part # is AR456
It's an Echlin part...box says Made in Malaysia...so you know it's good...
But it says "Bosch" on the actual relay...
12v
0 332 512 007
BOSCH
and on the other side, it says -
1636973
...$35.69...
BTW: The 1636973 seems to be the new GM part # (it's also in my GM parts book)...
www.gmpartsdirect.com has it listed as -
GM PART # 1636973
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $44.78
OUR PRICE: $22.38
DESCRIPTION: RELAY AY

I forgot to mention - that new # relay from NAPA has a "shroud" around the 5 plugs...My '86 socket wouldn't take it with the shroud...I had to cut it off...No problem, works fine now!

This is a very old topic it seems, but this is exactly the part I need! Does anyone know where I can track one down and get it sent to Australia?

eBay. That is how I got mine.

Confirm the part numbers, Bosch and GM on your old one that you believe you need. Here's an image of the most recent number that matches both the Bosch and GM. I'm not a "relay guy" but I don't know why with an understanding of relays why a person couldn't use an off the shelf relay with the correct diode and configuration. You might need to use a separate socket and then use male spades to plug into the module. If you found one of these relays - this is the one that you need to remove the shroud from to use directly anyway. Take this image and a copy of the page from your FSM to an electronics guy "who understands" and see what he says!
I believe the schematic on the relay matches the FSM.

I checked too; you are exactly right. Of the 14 ABS relays listed during a Search for "1986 Corvette ABS Relay", all had the picture of a relay with 'prong' terminals. My 1986 ABS module uses 'spade' terminals, pic here -
This is the relay I pulled out of my Vette back in 2005; I replaced it with the NAPA/Echelin AR456 relay (which needed the shroud cut away) which has the 'spade' terminals and is no longer available.
None of the numbers on my old relay are valid.

I really believe I've got this sorted. I actually used the Bosch information from yours but I of course couldn't match the terminal layout and sizes. Bosch sold the relay division maybe 7 or so years ago and that's why there's no stock or direct replacements out there.

WVZR-1, What relay do you believe will work??? And what socket???
#20
I don't have the terminal information but it will be just a pigtail similar BUT NOT THIS and a relay that fits it. On the leads we'll need to put male spades like your relay and it would be good if you could measure them for me. Width and thickness - I've got in mind what they should be but if you could take a vernier and confirm them it would be good.
