Default 4+3 1988 - pops out of gear while accelerating

Hey guys,

Throwing this out there to see if anyone has an idea as to what the problem may be.. Car has the 4+3 manual tranny in it.

The car will pop out of gear while under somewhat hard acceleration. If I run up the rpms to around 4500, and stay, it will pop out of gear.. If i run if up and shift, sometimes it will not find the gear.. Sometimes I can be cruising along in third gear at about 40mph and it pops out of gear.. Any ideas guys? Could this be a linkage problem/ or possibly the shifter wearing out?

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thank you!

Usually that means it needs a tranny.

The syncro teeth on your gears might be shot. I rebuilt mine for the same reason. Expect to pay $200 for each gear that slips out.

Have you ever had problems with the clutch hydraulics?

I havent had any issues with the hydraulics. Since the car was purchased, it has only been standard maintanence. Water pump here, alternator there... Nothing serious. Now it pops out of gear in 3rd and 4th... I think it has done it to me in 2nd to. All of this started happening at the same time - hence why I thought it was a linkage issue/ not synchro's...

How can I troubleshoot the hydraulics? Is there something I can do to test it, or something i can do to freshen it up?

If you plan on keeping the car for awhile look into getting a Richmond or doing a ZF conversion.

Yeah.. I've read up on the conversions quite a bit... I would attempt the conversion, but because my daily driver just spun a bearing.. I cant at this time..

I think it would actually be less time consuming then rebuilding the 4+3. The Richmond is a direct replacement; you could easily pull the 4+3 and install the Richmond in the same day. Ask me how I know this

I would be interested to know how you swapped out the 4+3 for a richmond in one day.. I will be working out of my garage with no lift.. Car will be up on modfied ramps and jack stands... Time is obviously and issue - but affording the unit itself.. Any idea where I can pick one up besides Ecklers - They are so overpriced..

Thank you!

You're probably looking at a rebuild, unless your forks just wore out overnight. It's possible the linkage loosened up, but that usually means you'll feel it in the shifter, and have trouble moving between the gates.

Don't rebuild the 4+3. You'll probaby need 3 gears, that'll run you $500+, then gaskets and a rebuild kit = $200 more. And that's if you do it yourself.

Get another 4speed or upgrade.
