Default gas gauge

my 88 vettes gas gauage is going nuts, It stickes on full when it does come down it is not accuate. also it reads diffent everytime you strat it , it will go up & down as you drive . Can you replace the send without replaceing the fuel pump, also does it go threw the ecm

There is a tech tip on how to repair the sender. Yes, there is a fuel signal from the dash to the ECM over the serial data line that is used to calculate Instant, Average and Range, but it has nothing to do with the Display. If those other functions are working (and they will be changing if the readout is going nuts), then that part of the circuitry is ok.
