Default How to BURP an 87

Had to use the heater for the first time Saturday night. Worked great for a minute then went cold. Went to eat, came out after an hour and it was fine (plenty of heat all the way home). Asked around and was told I probably have an air bubble in the cooling system and to "burp" it. Did a search and only talk is about bleeding screw on the newer models. Any quick pointers to help get the air out? TIA

They call it "packing". With everything cold, open up the radiator cap and fill it to the top. Start the car, and bring the RPMs up to about 2000-2500. The level in the radiator will drop. Fill it up while holding the RPMs up, and replace the radiator cap before you let off the throttle.

You need to let the car idle (with cap off) until it reaches tstat temperature.

Then do the procedure above. You can't fill the system fully unless the tstat is open.

I also run the heater during this. Not sure if that is necessary though.

Just back to say thanks again. Burped my baby as per your instructions above. Waited till the thermostat opened, reved it till about 2K and the level sunk like a rock. Filled a 20oz Coke bottle full of new 50/50 mix beforehand to make it easy to top off the radiator and while keeping it reved up, poured about 18oz in to the top and put the cap on before letting off the revs. Hopefully got all the air out...will know the next time I take it out.

CC: Ran the heater on full while doing the above...don't know if it helped but like Chicken Soup....it can't hurt.

You don't have to wait to take it out. As soon as it cools to where it is safe to remove the rad cap, pull it off and add some more 50/50 if there is room. You don't even have to start it, at this point. After you've done THAT a few times it will really be packed.

RACE ON!!!

A few times It's cooling down now so will see if it will take any more when it's safe. Thanks.

I've had success with this also... Jack the front end up, then do the above procedure, with heater running, and you'll notice you again have more room. Take it for a spin, back home cool off, jack up and reburp... Took me 3 times to get air all out...

I burp it one good time then overfill the overflow tank and let it do its thing. The car will remove air on its own at some point if you get enough out to allow it to build up to cap pressure.

Once its burped, you should only need to add coolant to the overflow tank, unless you let it run dry, then it'll pull air into the system. It's sort of like a brake hydraulic system in that regard, except it uses vacuum to lift coolant into it, instead of gravity from a reservoir.

All right. Jacked the front end up and "Burped" it again. Didn't overfill the reserve tank but it's up to the "cold" line so there should be plenty enough in there for the radiator to pull anything it needs. Will wait till it cools down, take the cap off and top it up. That should do it. Thanks.
