How To Get rid of the Pre-Cats
What is the best / easiest and cost effective way to get rid of them ? I'm buying a Cat-back exhaust and would like to get rid of the Pre-cats @ the same time . I dont really want to spend more money to buy a new front y pipe . I would like to have a exhaust shop do it ( If its legal to do ) and if not then what would you recomend to be rid of them .
Thanks in advance

yank off the pipe, cut them open, tear out the cat material, and weld it back

My '90 with 160K miles failed a CA smog test a couple of years ago due to an old cat and some bad injectors. A new cat allowed me to barely slip past the sniffer. I've since installed new injectors, a cat back Magnaflow exhaust and new pre-cats. My last smog check was so clean I achieved 0.0 in both CO (%) tests. All other readings were very good. Go figure.

I'm having mine cut off this Friday. They're just going to cut them off with a torch, and put pipe in to replace them. The main cat is already gone. I'm hoping against hope that I don't get the dreaded yellow SES light on the info panel, but a few of the Tech section gurus have assured me that it won't be a problem.

Great info guy's . I'm going buy a "backyard " exhaust shop today to see if they'll just cut them out and put on a pipe.
I'll let you guys know how I made out .

Sawzall, you may need a large dia. cutting wheel for a side grinder if the sawz blade doesn't fit. Have a neighbor or friend weld new pipe in.

...or wait until they both blow their wads a month apart from each other, thus getting stuck in the main cat, thus letting you limp home at 15mph because your exhaust is now clogged and wondering what just happened, then having fun while you have no exhaust on for a week until you figure out how to get the pre-cat crap out of the pipes LOL
as for the main cat... crowbar works best Just make sure to clean up the mess since that stuff is toxic. I rammed mine all out over newspapers on the driveway.

You can get a new front "Y" for as little as $150. I bet the shop charges nearly that much to chop and repair your existing pipes. And, the end result is an old front "Y".
Spend an extra couple bucks and do it right.

Thanks for the help guys . I have a bad injector problem and think that has to be tackled first. I will comeback to this once I get my injector issue taken care of and I put on my exhaust .
