I took my 87 to front end shop to do a wheel alignment and they told me they could not do it cause the rear wheel bearing was gone. I replaced it along with the control arm bushings and had the same play, in my case it is not the wheel bearing. With the help of a friend and a lift you can see the knuckle moving which means the bearing is tight. I was told by a GM mechanic who ownes a corvette that a badley worn u-joint can cause this problem. I am putting in a new halfshaft with new spicer u-joints. I will update when I am done.

Unfortunatley, the U-joints are not my problem. It is the bearing, and I can see it move in relation to the knuckle. I really still think I have bad bearings from GM. I looked at another car today that had rear drive and independant suspension. The only difference between this and a Vette is it did not use the axle as a suspension link and had a CV joint instead of a solid U-joint. Anyway, the result was no play in the hub what so ever.

You know I could understand actually having a little in/out play, but this is not the movement I get. I am grabbing the wheel at 12 and 6. At 6 I am lifting up and away from the car. At 12, I am pushing in. This is cocking the bearing so to speak. About the only other way I could describe it would be to say the bearing is acting like a ball joint....I am getting a wobble motion, but not in and out. I can get this motion at any two points on the wheel 12/6, 9/3, 7:30/1:30.

It just doesn't seem right!!!!!!
FYI: Corvettes finished 2nd and 3rd overall at the Houston Grand Prix this past weekend. Only being beaten by the Audi R8 which is in a whole different class. Go Corvettes!!!!!!

Could this be movement that is occurring at the diff end of the stub axel? As previously stated the stub axel acts as the lower control arm in the IRS and inboard/outboard movement of the stub axel could cause the "loose" feel that you describe. sj

Unfortunatley I have had three other people look at it just to see if I was missing something and it is in the wheel bearing. I even used a dial indicator between the hub and the knuckle. All the bolts were torqued and mating surfaces were cleaned and seating properly. I think it is just my luck. I seem to atract the weird Gremlins. I haven't had time to play with it anymore yet. And I was waiting to hear back from some other calls I made. If nothing else I will get my education on sealed wheel bearings.

If you decide to drive it the way that it is, be sure to have it aligned with a good amount of rear toe-in. These cars will toe-out a bit when they squat anyway... and add to that some looseness in the rear bearing and you'll likely get an unstable feeling. I think that 1/8 or even 3/16 total toe-in would be helpful. Happy motoring!

It is kind of weird that you say that. My buddy made the switch to 275s for all 4 tires and wanted me to see the difference. (I have 255 fronts and 285 rears) I told him I needed more rear grip than more front grip. I was loosing the back end stability on exit. I just wander if that could actually have something to do with what I am feeling. (The guys laughed when I said this same thing, "You're crazy, that couldn't make that much difference!") Then again, maybe it's the loose nut behind the wheel? Hmmmmmmmmmm.............
