Default What causes flashing SYS in speedo cluster?

Hey guys, I just finished the CD player install in my 96. Since completion however I notice a flashing SYS  in the speedo. It's there when I start the car but goes away while driving, when I park and leave the car running it comes back on. Any thoughts on what causes this? I am sure the new Kenwood is wired right, although it won't dim with the dash lights. Does it have something to do with taking the radio control and receiver out of the car? Thanks in advance.

If you put in an aftermarket cd player, you need to hook up two resistors to the electrical system so that it thinks the factory stereo is still in there. I do not have the instructions written down, I did this a while ago, but try the tech tips section, I think the procedure is in there.

Here ya go!

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new stereo, he will need to do the following:

1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 Watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2-pack for 29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car.)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Thanks ya'll. Let me get this right now- I'm looping the resistors into the factory radio control harness plugs in the dash thus fooling the ccm into thinking the original radio is still there? Thanks again.

actually, it doesn't care about the original radio... the resistors are to finish off a circuit that runs the dimmer system. If the circuit is broken, then you get the code you have.....

Also a note for anyone else reading this.... the resistors are only necessary on manual a/c cars. Ones with auto climate control don't have this problem.

Thanks again to all. Put the resistors in and think it is fixed. :D Side note: I didn't find a yellow wire or any wire for that matter in the original plugs that was ignition hot, I had to use the ignition hot wire off the back of the new radio.

I don't think I found a yellow wire either. If I remember right, I just used a test crimper and a voltmeter and found the wire that supplied 12v only when the iginition was turned to on.

Hmmm... .those instructions were for a '96, so maybe there's some differences there. Glad to hear you got it working!
