Default "lt1 intake or tpis mini ram upgrade?"

hi there guys,
iv done searches and i know its all been discussed before but i can not make up my mind wheather to take the chance and but the lt1 intake kit from scott@lt1intake.com or lash out and buy the tpis mini ram!
i have also looked on vaders86 great site as well!

it will be put on 1991 l98 engine with 6 speed g/box and will eventually be running "afr' ported heads, tpis zx9 cam, lightnend flywheel, with already twin 2/1/2"mandrel exhausts/ with high flow cats,x-pipe/magnaflow rear mufflers as already all fitted to car.
also has 52mm t/b underdive pulley kit,a/o front number plate forced air filter kit, igntion, plugs leads.
price could be a factor
performance wise between the two is the main main factor.

what are your opoiuns please guys?

i heard the lt1 intake has a wider torque /power band over the tpis mini ram is this correct?

they both look very similair in design/shape!
but lt1 intake kit from scott will be cheaper to buy though~!

also with the mini ram it seems i am going to loose out on lwer-mid rpm, is this rite at all?

what sort of horsepower shall i gain from either manifold upgrade?
may be 30 hp do you think?

hope i can make up my mind about this soon!

thanks for your time guys
cheers

I don't think you can get an LT1 intake from Scott right now. Last I heard he wasn't able to produce the intakes until next year or something. If you can find an LT1 intake, I would go that route. It's basically identical to the MR, but it costs a lot less. I have a modded one in my garage right now waiting to be put on my 91.

The LT1 so close to the MR that I would just go with the LT1. Why waste the $$ on something that is almost identical? I am kinda in the same boat as you. Just that I am debating on LT1 or SR.

Have you looked in the C4 parts 4 sale section? I just saw an LT1 conversion with lots of extras for sale a couple of days ago.

Go with whichever you find cheapest, but just throwing it on with a chip retune should make your car just like an LT1. All the mods they do to start, are the ones you'll want to do.

hi there guys,
thanks for the replys/info!

both intakes look so close dont they?

what is the difference in performance between the two though?

as i stated above i heard that the lt1 inake has more torque curve than the just high end rpm the mini ram has, is this rite at all?

the lt1 intake kit will cost around $800.00 u.s complete im guessing and the mini ram will be $1,250 u.s complete all up!
thanks again guys

The advantage of the MiniRam is the air gap under the plenum. I don't know how it compares to the heat generated by the LT1 but it does stay cool. I also like the fact that it's cast with the correct distributor hole position and angle. Yes it's expensive but in my opinion worth the money.

I'm sorry but I do not have performance comparison numbers between the two.

You're going to have difficulty finding a direct comparison between the 2. They are so similar that I don't think anyone has gone from the MR ot the LT1 or vice versa. Most people when they make an intake change are looking to do something more drastic.

My guess is that the curve between the 2 intakes would be less than 10 TQ/HP different at any point.

Will the l98 injectors and TB bolt up to the lt1 intake?

The injectors will work, but the rails will not. You'll need the LT1 fuel injection rails. Your TB will work.

There is a complete LT1 conversion, ready to bolt on, in the classifieds for about $500 right now.

About what kind of tq & hp increse can I expect on a stock l98? all the numbers I've seen like vaders site and some others is on mod motors. I suppose it's a good start for other mods like cam and heads. Also with the EGR removed, will it pass emissions, if they don't do a visual check?

It will need a chip tune to pass emissions.

But to see what numbers you'll get just look at the engines. LT1 cam is essentially the same as L98, and LT1 heads are very close to '113s. So you can expect your engine to make approximately the same as an LT1.

It shouldn't need a chip just for the miniram or LT1 however they usually have tip in issues (among other fuel requirement changes) to run best they need a chip

The car came with a hypertech chip. Can I have it reburned and by who as I would change the cam when I did the manifold.

I had a converted LT1 on my shelf which I never put on due to the fact I didn't want the remote Tstat housing and didn't feel like R&Ding fuel lines, regulator, small cap dist and taking the chance on it not sealing up proper.

I ponied up the money and got a mini and as far as just bolting it on and getting it setup it is pretty damn easy to do. Don't believe the hype about the loss of torque from people who have never used them.

YES, they need a chip due to tip in issues. I had major tip-in issues in the beginning as in lean backfiring thru the intake manifold. I am still at least a burn away from having my tip-in cured in colder weather. Alvin has my program so he should be pretty close to getting a chip the first or second time. I am running a 219.
