Default 1986 coupe rear spring bolts

In tightening the rear spring bolts on my 86 coupe, how much rod tread should be exposed beyond the nut? How much do I actually have to tighten the nut?
thanks.

As much as you had before you took it a part, unless you want to change the rear ride height. Or, until you like the way it looks.

Thats the whole thing. I dont think the previous owner did it correctly, one side of the car,(rear) seems an inch higher than the other side.

It's a leaf spring supported in the center. The bolts on the ends ought to be the same length. There should be holes drilled in those bolts from the factory for a cotter pin to keep the nut at that spot. I don't think one could go too wrong with it if using the original parts. jmo

Do your spring bolts not use castled nuts and cotter pins? If not, they are not the original hardware. And if it does still have these, there is very little leeway for adjustment. The only way you can really do so is by adding washers to the low side to shorten the effective length of the bolt.

A full explanation of the situation, the first time could save a bunch of monkey motion.
