Default Torque converter recommendation?

I have a stock 84. Any recommendations for a TC?

Thanks

A 2000-2300 stall, 12 inch, lock up converter. Avoid TCI and B&M.

I have a Vigilante and its great. A little pricey but you get what you pay for. I'm not sure what stall an 84 has stock so I'm not sure you may even need one. Seems to me the earliest C4's had decent stall speed.

Pete
Is the 2000-2300 stall stock on the 84?

Heehaw
What is pricey? I'd like to keep it under 300. In fact 200 would be real nice. Am I just dreaming?

Thanks for your input

The company I use hand builds them for me for $300. E-bay has them much cheaper. So cheap that I question the quality. If I recall correctly, 84 was not a higher factory stll. That was 85 and 86. 84 was a transitional year for the 700r4. Most had a 27 spline input shaft, limiting aftermarket selection. Later year 84's supposidly had the 30 splines, but I have yet to come across one. The first step before buying is to determine which one you have in your car.

Just counted them. The smaller input shaft has 30, the larger has 27. Which one do I count?

The smaller shaft with the o ring on the end is the input shaft. That is the one to count. If it measures 30 splines, you likely have a later year trans in the 84. Or, that is the first 84 I have run across with a 30 spline input shaft. Regardless, that is the one that matters for torque converter fitment. The stator shaft(larger diameter, closest to the front pump seal) are all the same size.

I"m the third owner so I don't know for certain if it is the original, but I think it is. I just counted the spines again. 30 for sure. I think you mentioned there being a bigger selection of after market TC's for the 30 spline?

30 spline is the most common.
