Default L98 cylinder heads

I've read through alot of the threads, links etc.. I have a rebuilt planned for the this winter with a ' 90 L98 - mostly intake - super ram w/base intake manifold & 1.6 RR. I don't know if I will ever get to the cam in this car. It is basically a street vehicle

Will porting the 113 heads be worth it? Or should I get after market heads?

What's the cost to port vs. buying heads?

Any recommendations on where?

Thanks

By the time you pay for a good valve job, guides, springs, bigger valves etc you could have bought a nice set of aftermarkets that will perform even better. Edelbrock Performers for a hair over $1000/ pr, Trick Flows for $11/1200,AFR for $1450+, etc etc.

Older heads IMO arent worth putting money into unless you are doing a stock rebuild or want the original stuff in there. Any head can be ported with modest gains, but there is much better out there for the money.

A much more efficient (modern design) head is usually a more powerful head.

Check this out. http://www.superchevy.com/technical/...0511sc_vortec/ And this too. The Vortec GM heads are iron but I think they go for $700.00. http://www.sdpc2000.com/htm/vortec_tpi.html This might be a nice setup for a low budget street machine. You could port your stock plenum ($100.00 at TPIS) and get ASM runners. Everyting you need would be around $1500.00. That's less than the price of some aftermarket heads. The iron heads weigh about 40 lbs more than aluminum. Do a search on AFR heads before you buy.

Don't you also need a Vortec specific intake manifold with those heads?

Yes, SDPC has the Vortec TPI manifold for sale as well.

TPIS offers a Vortec style MiniRam here too

I guess there are two different vortec heads. The high flowing are around $700.00.

I bought a set of tricks for $1240 and sold my 113 heads for $480. I have $760 stuck in a pair of decent aftermarket heads.

http://www.aeroheadracing.com/id7.html makes a nice replacement head that is reasonably price and flow pretty well according to some articles I've read.

If i had to do it all over again, I would just buy a new set. Downtime is alot less, and the cost difference is not a big factor.

I would buy a new set. The 113 heads aren't bad for some street applications but if you've taken them off and examined them, you'll see the casting quality on the 113 heads really stink!

You'll spend more on aftermarket heads but when you factor in the time, it's not going to be that much more.

  • outflow 885 Iron Vortecs at peak
  • outflow Edelbrock E-Tec 170 across the board
  • outflow Edelbrock Performer Corvette across the board
  • do not need a different intake
  • are aluminum
  • have angled plugs
  • have 56cc chambers (stock is 58cc)
  • cost less than $1,000 for use with a 0.480 lift cam
(slightly more money for higher lift spring)
  • are made in the USA by a respected head company
  • are in stock for immediate shipping

Oh, and out of the box, these bolt-on heads outflow
the L98 D113 by 22.4%/16.8% (In/Ex).

Where? All I see is that they say your vortec heads will have to be redrilled.

Default fast Burn?

Been thinking about getting Fast Burn heads, along with the Scoggin vortec manifold.

Anyone got experience with these? how is plug/header (TPIS) clearance.

Did I mention that they are available in both pre-1987'
(perimeter bolt valve covers) and 1987-95' (center-bolt) patterns?

No...and you didn't mention the BRAND NAME or where to get them either...Hopefully, you're not referring to the generic Ebay heads.

True, I didn't mention the brand name but,
as I said, they are made in the USA by a
respected head company. I feel confident
there will be few if any groans about the mfr.

(BTW - is there a generic eBay head that has
the characteristics described earlier?)

But back to the question - is the original
poster interested in such a head?

Or does he prefer a set of Flushmaster Supremes
that he'll need to pay a good deal more for
and then pay yet more again to either angle
mill the heads & intake, or change his pistons
in order to bring the compression back into spec?
Not to mention possibly having to cope with
special spark plugs to accomodate exhaust
manifolds or headers designed for angle plugs?
And so on ...

Why the big secret??? What are these mystery heads you speak of?

I'm looking for heads for my car as well...but I think I'll just pay a grand and get the Trick Flows, or $900 for Summit's private label version...since I want 64cc chambers, and they aren't safeguarding the info/details like you are...

Here's the Ebay heads that are almost as TOP SECRET as the ones you're trying to sell.

I'm not selling the heads. A buyer would have to
source them on their own, Jegs and Summit both
carry them.

(Edit: Summit carries them, but they do not come up at Jegs.)

The eBay heads in the link are 64cc and appear to
be massaged versions of Patriot Performance SBC
Super Street Assembled Heads
.

Humour me for a little bit longer until flatbush862
has a chance to respond.
