'89 Convertible Rear RPO Codes ?
I just bought an '89 Convertible Auto Vette and was doing some RPO code research. I have the codes G44 (3.07 gears), G87 (8.5" Ring gear) and G92 (performance axle ratio). I understand the G92 means that I have a performance gear rather than the 2.59, hence the G44. What doesn't make sense to me is the G87. I was under the understanding that '89 Corvettes with the auto had the D36, and an 8.5" gear won't fit. Does this mean I have a D44? Were there any '89 auto verts made with the D44?

It sounds like your car has had either a trans swap or a service parts identification tag swap. What transmission ("M") codes are on that tag? What you describe is a shouldn't exist.

I doubt anything was swapped, the car is a 94,000 mile bone stock car. I'll look into all the other RPO codes tonight. Yesterday I just took home the "G" codes. No matter what was swapped, if anything, the tag doesn't add up. Only the automatics were available with the G92 code (I think). No way should a G92 and a G87 be on the same tag, no matter what car it is out of, but I have it. The tag is like new, plain as day to read. I'll check other things to see if the tag has been swapped and I'll check the bottom of the carrier if I can. Anyone else ever heard of a 8.5" ring gear in an automatic convertible?

Any chance it is new? Where is this tag with the G87 code? The one under the console lid?
Neither CorvetteActionCenter.com, 'Corvette Black Book' or 'CorVette Specs'
listings for RPO codes mention G87. For '89, the 8.5" ring gear is specified
for 3.33:1 and 3.45:1 ratios. The 3.07 and numerically lower ratios are
all said to be based on the 7.875" OD ring gear.

I checked the vin on the RPO tag in the console and compared it to the one on my title and my windshield. The console lid must have been swapped. Whatever car that console lid came out of must have been an odd ball. I jacked mine up and cleaned the bottom of the housing. It has 2.59's Was hoping for 3.07's. Thanks for the help, I'm a newbie to Corvettes but I am excited to be in the game finally!!!!

Unfortunate about the code sheet - it leaves you without a breakdown
of the car's actual configuration. Hopefully this wasn't a ploy by an
unscrupulous former owner.
If interested, you can order a build sheet through the National Corvette
Museum. Details here
