Default Fuel gauge always reads full..

My fuel gauge always reads full, is there anything else it could be besides a bad sending unit? Also how do you replace the sending unit? Can you access it from the top?

I would think that your '86 FP would be like the later LT1's and mounted below the filler neck. With any luck, you just have a stuck float level or bad level sender.

Check your wiring between the gauge and the sending unit first. If you have to pull the sender, chances are you won't need a new gasket.

RACE ON!!!

Which wire is for the fuel level sender? There are 3 wires on my module, a ground and 2 wires but I can't really tell what colors they started off as but one has a tracer...

You can get the fuel tank gasket at any chevy dealership it costs about $15 if i remember correctly. When i was having fuel gauge problems i took out my sending unit and then reconnected the wires and manually moved the float up and down to make sure my faul gauge would increase and decrease. Also something you can do while it is out you can take apart and clean the actual part that sends the signal as the float moves up and down. I have a document that is a detailed step by step on how to do this... pm me you email address if you want me to send it to you

My gas gauge always read FULL until I cleaned the fuel level sending unit contacts. Now it works perfectly. Use the above tech tip

I tried cleaning the contact on the sending unit on my 86 because the guage read full all the time. The ohm readings were not correct afterwards as posted in the tech tip. Put it all back in and the guage starting dropping as if it were reading correctly. I got to about 3/4 tank on the guage and I ran out of gas in the tank. Didn't work for me, but might for you.

Followed the tech article and it worked. Now I need to find me a new gasket and strainer. Stores were closed today, and my gasket is FUBAR'd really bad.
