Calling all 165 to 730 ECM guys.
I'm going to start tunning/burning my own chip. Right now I have a MAF 88 vette. I was wondering if I should upgrade to the 730 ECM? I hear that the MAT/speed density type ECM is easier to program when it comes to the chip because you do not have the MAF tables to mess with? Is this true?
Next: Is the change over from the 165 to 730 really hard? What about the dash, and other things that are controled by the Ecm? Is it really just a matter of making the adapter to plug the 730 in and putting in the new knock senor, and MAP sensor? And you're ready to go?
Thanks for any, and all input.

Haven't done it but found this page some time ago. http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap_730/.
It might be of some use

Think you have things backwards. A MAF system is easier to prog than a MAP.
The 730 is the F body stuff. Maybe you ought to look at the 727 ECM.
I am sure it can be done. You will wind up doing a far amount of rewiring though. That's before you touch the PROM.

To answer your questions
Is the change over from the 165 to 730 really hard?
Not too bad, Depends if you use an adaptor or repin the connectors. if you use the adpator you will have ability to swap back
What about the dash, and other things that are controled by the Ecm?
You WILL lose the AVG,Instant fuel, and DTE options on the dash. Everything else should work
Is it really just a matter of making the adapter to plug the 730 in and putting in the new knock senor, and MAP sensor? And you're ready to go?
Basically Yes

I used the 730 mainly because it was a passenger compartment computer that used the same style connectors as the previous Vettes used. If you use the original 90-91 Corvette ECM, you have to aquire all the computer plugins and it appears the pins would be tougher to remove.
As for tuning the Speed Density, I feel it is super easy. Cruise down the road and log some data. Set up a macro for MS Excel and import the data into it. For tuning the VE tables, all you gotta do is divide 2 numbers and multiply it by a third. I didn't ever get into MAF scalars with my 85 setup because it had appeared a little daunting at first. The wiring took my father and me a day and a case.-Matt-

I have experiance with both. I currently have the 7730 ECM that I connected by a direct pin out to the 7730 ECM plugs. The SD ECM is easier to tune but its much more sensitive to changes. The MAF is much more forgiving. There is less to fool with with the MAF car except for timing and WOT fuel. It depends what you want. Some tuners shoot for 128/128 BLM/INT values and others like me just liek a great running car. My opinion is to cut your teeth on tuning with the 165 ECM and learn all about it. Then maybe switch to the 7730 to compare. Join the DIY-Prom list on the thirdgen site and do lots of searches and reading. I'll help all I can. There is alot more than adding an ECM, MAP and knocker. Well maybe not alot but there are wiring issues and stuff.

I don't mind lossing the avg. gas thing, and the miles traveled stuff. The temp reading/volt reading I do mind lossing. What have you guys done to get the temp readings. Or did you?
Thanks for the info guys. This really helps me out.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was a bit worried there for a few.
TNTcorvette I think I may just take you up on one of those Ecms. I'll e-mail here in the next few days.
Thanks again.
